3D Studio Max Gurus?
#2
Hi Mojo,
I've used it for a number of years now.
not the easiest of programs to muck about with. just ask the question and I will try to answer it. Max is a bit dated these days if you're serious you need MAYA

Basicly you can only pick two objects at a time. One you select the cylinder then >compound objects>boolean you pick operator B -one of the (oil tanks) this then creates the cylinder with a flute cut into it. If you then pick another operator it resets the first one and only uses the second one. In order to get around this, do the following - perform the first boolean cut then exit the
>compound objects>boolean Command by selecting say the modify pane in the command window, then reselect the create>compound objects>boolean and then select another oil tank. Continue until you have the column you desire.
This definitely works in 3D Max 3 (just tied it) I am not aware that you can do multiple selections of cutting objects in Max but I might be wrong.
Hope this is of use

Mitch,
Yeah, that's what I tried. I understand that I have to do it repeated times and therefore build up a stack of modifiers. But for some reason I can only ever have one groove.
I'm begining to think it might be my PC spec.
I'm currently running on Win 2k pro with P3 500 and 256MB.
Do you know what the minimum spec is for version 4 at all?
I realise that booleans are very resource hungry. Is there a better way of achieving what I want, other than bump texturing?
Cheers

Mojo,
You need to use a spline to create a [ shape with the indentations in it, so that you have in effect a silhouette of one side of the pillar.
Then use the Lathe modifier.. this is the easiest way of getting a low vertex column.
Good luck mate.
