I see that the new design for the replacement of the Twin Towers has been decided and is to be built.
Cost £220 million
We decide to build a football pitch.....
Cost £750 Million (and thats before it goes massively overbudget, and is a government embarrasment!)
Cynical....who Moi??...

1 and 2 WTC (the old towers) were insured for either USD 3.5 bn, or USD 7bn, depending on who you talk to (there's a bit of a dispute about this at the moment as to whether the loss of both towers constitutes one insurance loss or two ) - so I think 220m to rebuild is a bit cheap, unless they are going for five stories and a couple of flower beds

They are replacing the twin towers, not rebuilding them. Some sort of angular glass building which will have the world's tallest spire on to I think I heard

I suspect its more too, but the twin towers contract won't include any fit out costs (walls, ceilings, raised floors, decs, electrics, data cabling, aircon, etc) and that can be 70% of the cost of a modern building.

read this at 220 million as well. - Also will be 1776 feet tall with the spire (Declaration of Independence...July 4, 1776)
If they do it for 220 milliom I bet it is really really skinny

GBP220M is an enormous amount of money
The problem is that we have all been de-sensitised to the real cost of things, as Dr Hu points out. The "joke" of Wembley Stadium has already cost over GBP80M in legal fees alone, is already years late, and will end up costing far more than GBP750M. But why should each and every seat cost over GBP10,000???? Because we are being brainwashed as to what stuff really costs. How many billions has been promised to sort out the railways, and how many extra billions keeps getting pumped into the NHS - yet nothing concrete ever appears.
So how tall is the new WTC going to be? Even if it is 220 storeys high (which it won't be), then that is a million pounds per floor. An empty building (no desks, computers, phones etc.) can't be that expensive. They don't have to buy the land (normally the major cost of a house purchase), so a million quid for a couple of hundred girders plus a scattering of concrete per floor seems perfectly sensible.
Ask not why WTC2 is so cheap, but why everything that we do in this country is sooooo expensive!!!!!!!

Wembly......... They should get the "Fraud Squad " in right now.
Lots of money has already started to Go missing. Heard a few rumours about the companies that are removing the hardcore etc.. Seems the weight per load is not as it should be on many occasions.
