Just hit 11.3% today.

Hmmmm, maybe they could use that vast unutilised resource to rebuild the wall

Angry

Give over.
They're just the only country daft/stupid enough not to have found a way of releasing "better" official figures yet.

it should probably be higher given the 'overhead' in Civil Service and other Governmental pursuits.

I spoke to one of my German colleagues about it this morning and he said "ah, yes - but that includes Eastern Germany so it's not really a fair figure".

Nice the see that the culture of reunification has really gripped the West

probably due to a downturn in their sales of WMD production laboratories to iraq.

don't you just love 'em: still can't pick the winning side ...

LOL at HG I think they need to re-define "cynic"..!!

AC, your colleague is right. If you take purely the West German numbers, you can actually demonstrate that unemployment is falling, as alcazar suggests.

Whoever thought out the unification payed scant regard to the economic ramifications, it was purely a political gesture in tune with the times.

Which leads us nicely back to the Iraq war...!!!

Sounds sooooo like "unifying" the EC with 10 bankrupt eastern european countries. There were the same calls in Germany of bigger markets, access to cheaper labour etc and sure enough we will all be paying substantially more so that Polish and Turkish farmers can also grow nothing
