Oh gawd. Switched on the TV tonight and the colours are f****d.

There's a purple haze all the way around the screen and everythings gone a shade of purple, grreny yello and cyan. - is it the tube gone? More serious? Is it fixable?

The TV is (was) fantastic - its a JVC AV-32WP2EK and its about 4 and a half years old.

Timing is paticularly painful as girlfriend has just gone away for 4 nights and I was planning some major PS2 and watching F1 sessions over the weekend

Anyone know whats happened and got a number for a honest TV repair man in London?

Cheers

Marc

Or should I just replace it with a Plasma before she gets back

Thumbs down

Definately no magnets nearby - just a little Bose Cube speaker sitting on top of it. No warning of anything going to happen - it was fine last night....

Yes the Bose is shielded. I'll take it away and give it a go anyway!

Cheers

Really? I thought they were shielded and to be used exactly for this purpose? Its been on top of the TV for nearly 3 years now so a bit late to move it!

It's a Bose Lifestyle system. Can't remember what model number it was at the time cos they've changed them I think but its 3 years old and looks to be exactly the same components as this one:

I have only ever seen the middle speaker mounted above the telly..not on it. But as its been there for years.. maybe its ok. Try the turning on/off thing. It always works for me.

As mentioned earlier turn thing on and off and check for zzzz sound of degaussing when turning on. If it is the CRT should get a new one fitted foc on grounds of fit for purpose as CRT's are typically designed for 20 year life.

Thanks for your replies.

I've tried turning on and off now loads of times and its unchanged. Greens have gone blue. Red has gone green. All the colours have gone mad. Actual content clarity is fine - its just the colours are all wrong.

I'll see what its like in the morning and if no change I'll contact JVC.

Provided you have a picture and red, green and blue are displaying then probably safe to say CRT vacuum and gun working OK. Sounds like a board fault.

Mike - there's definately no red at all - more like light purple. Mainly its cyan / purple / yellowy-green.

As purple is red and blue mixed together then both will be OK. Usually with these faults it's down to a blown IC or dry joint. Time to call out the repair man.

Dumb suggestion: it's not just a dodgy SCART cable, is it? If you're missing the red component, it could just be a broken wire.

If not, I agree that the tube is probably OK, and that it's a board fault somewhere that shouldn't be too expensive to fix or replace.

No wonder your tube is gone, most of them are made in France! LOL

How about a projector? (plasma either too small or too expensive I think)

it might need degaussing, we have a degaussing wand at work, its a huge electromagnet and you pull it away from the screen & it realigns the thingys to get your colours sorted. Sorry I never saw your post earlier as you could have borrowed it, would have done no harm.

Could be a dry joint on the board that sits on the end of the tube. On the speaker front all the speakers for the Lifestyle series are safe to put ontop of the set. I have fitted dozens of them this way with no problems at all. If you are in the market for a new tv/plasma/projector have a look here www.bestpricetv.com we have some good deals on at the mo. I also have an ex-demo 40" loewe for £2.5k and a Sharp 30"LCD for £2.5 again ex-demo. Mail me if you are interested.

Well err apparently it was a thermostat thingy that broke which controlled the degaus coil thingie which meant it wasn't demagnetising. New coil and new thermostat and it's all working fine.

Unfortunately the bill wasn't big enough to justify a Plasma!

Definantly a Degaussing fault could be something in the startup circuit in the power supply.

Get it checked out by a local dealer but it is definantly NOT the tube.

Sounds like the red gun in the tube done down, or possible a board fault preventing the red gun working. Worth getting it checked out anyway.
