Question

Anyone had people phoning up trying to get investment in shares of soon to be floated (allegedly) companies? The bloke was very insistent and reckoned we could make 100% plus profits within 18 months. Wanted $10,000! I just searched for the name of his outfit on the 'net and drew a big blank.

Charlie.

Yeah, suppose so. While the guy was going on and on I was thinking "So this means that there must be people out there who would part with £6,000 on the strength of one telephone call, otherwise this guy wouldn't have a job..."

Is it taken as read that all these things are a scam, or are they just a big risk?

This is illegal under the Financial Services Act. Don't part with your money.

Camk - wrong - I make unsolicited calls. My gameplan is to find people who will be my clients for the next 30 years. Most of my existing client bank will tell you they are much better off thanks to an unsolicited call.

Pete - More accurate but depends on the wording. If there is a 'could' in there they can say what they want.

Mishter P. Charlie - Best to stay away. There are potential opportunities (drunk sp) out there that will get you 100% within 18 months, but if someone is calling you about them the risk factor must be very very high.

i wasn't seriously thinking about handing over money - I was just wondering if I had done what would happen. would it be hand over money and never see/hear anything more about it, or would it be hand over money and end up with shares that might or might not lose much of their value. I found some info about IPOs and as far as I could make out it would be very unlikely that some bloke I didn't know from adam would be selling me genuine pre IPO shares. Like I said, I suppose someone must go for it, but then there are mugs out there...
