Question

Network has slightly expanded over time & I need to u/grade (replace) some UPS's & need more...

Any recommendations?

Ideally long time/managed & low cost!!!

Prefer rack where poss 'cos I've some space left...

8 servers & 1 monitor
2 Phone systems (1 Dig 1 Anologue)
8 Hubs/Switches/Routers
5 w/stations

Need to cover for approx 5-10 minutes so that we have a chance to print work in progress/upcoming work and have a chance to divert phone system...

Generators would be lovely, but we're on the 3rd floor of a listed building

I've only used APS one's, and they have allways done the job OK. on unix, you can plug the server into the ups, and before the ups dies it cleanly shuts down the server and saves all open files + data.

You need to calculate the power drawn by all of your kit, and from there you can choose a UPS that will handle the draw for the time you need.

We did alot of work at various power stations and other industrial IT applications. We have used:-
Chloride - expensive but good quality
Failsafe - Cheap and not really suited for industrial appliactions
Victron - Mid priced

Generally UPS do not seem to be very reliable. However they are better than generators. Normally its the batteries that die, particularly if the UPS are left with no power on for a while, but we have had blown inverters.

We are now part of siemens and they make UPS but I dunno what they are like. Most of the siemens kit seems to be good price & quality though.

Hey PTMW! hows it going....

Sorry I haven't been in touch but I have been in holiday then in hospital - long and painful story and only just out from hospital - not allowed to drive for three weeks

Anyhow we use Chloride for our main servers expensive but reliable and you can buy as an option extra maintenance cover your ups monitors itself and phones chloride with any problems. It is very strange to get phone calls from Chloride saying that your ups requires a replacement battery!!

We have APC ups's (which siemens rebadge and call there own IMO) for phone system etc and this is cheap and good.

How far from the top floor are you? We have a customer who has the generator on the roof. Generators are more reliable these days and can be power by bottled gas thus making fueling them easy..

Any idea of what sort of VA that lot takes up? 8 Servers will eat a fair bit of juice.

APC are now offering the Symmetra in a rack form which offers a few features over the usual Smart-UPS RM.

We've got a two APC UPS in our server room, one floor (1400va) and one rack (1000va). The main provider for our server room is a 8000va which is hard wired into a distribution board. For the life of me though, I cannot remember who made it! It's been 100% reliable since we had it put in 12 months ago but it was stupidly heavy!

I've also used some of the smaller Best Power products on customer installs and they have proved very reliable even when sat in loft spaces.

I can point you in the direction of a company that specialises in UPSs if you want Puff?
