Right, strange one this but someone should know.
A certain person (who might even be reading this) takes their watch off in a meeting & places it on the table. But their superior has done that for a long time, and we think that the certain person is just trying to mimic their superior (cause he just wants to be him).
Now when, you take the watch off & put it down, is that commonly a way of saying...
"I have plenty of time for you..."
I'm sure the certain person puts it down with the clock face facing them which to me, would say
"This had better not take long"
Anybody studied this kind of thing, that can give me an answer to why this wierdo is doing it? cause I doubt he even knows
I just think that he doesn't have a clue & is being rude without knowing it

I didnt know so much could be read into taking your watch off Although I have never done it in a meeting, I take it off at my desk when my wrist gets sweaty! Maybe subconciously I am wondering if my day at work will take long, cause I hate work, and want to go home as early as possbile

Perhaps it's a very expensive watch, which you're supposed to notice? It's a less interesting explanation, but I've seen plenty of people do it with car keys, mobiles, laptops, gold pens, etc. etc.

Is it an expensive watch, praps hes wasted a few grand and thinks he's gonna impress everyone.
Next time he takes it off say, 'hey is that one of those new casio's, I bought one once but it melted the last time I left it on the table'

Weird if you ask me
Sounds like the person is trying to make a statement of
"I'm in charge and when I say the meeting is finished its FINISHED"
One of my old directors use to have a chair you sat lower than him and everything on his desk was near you so he had more room
I use to stand up and move things towards him
Gezz it use to bug him big time

I remember watching a program about this kind of thing years ago. It is not uncommon for subordinates to subconciously ape the behaviour of their superiors. The example given on said program was to stretch the arms above the heAD.

Next time you go to a meeting with him ask a few of your colleagues to take thier watches off along with yourself,at the exact time that your boss does, and place them on the table.
It will show him how strange it looks.

I dont wear a watch.(they annoy me)..but..in what manner does he put it on the table, casually or assertively and all at right angles to the table/notepad/beer whatever. I would take it as a being bellitling(sp ?)as in time is money, trying to be more important than yourself, or along those lines. Does he rub where his watch has been afterwards, as if to say "the watch is annoying me" ??
Still strange if you ask me.

It does sound strange, but it's difficult to determine the context in which he does it. I must admit, as I read this post I looked at my desk to see my watch sitting there, as I also find it uncomfortable. I don't think I'd do it in a meeting situation like that though.
People are a funny lot, eh?

Some good points here, I'll be sure to watch () out for them
I'm sure he has it facing him, I can't be sure though.
I have to say, I do like the idea of us all taking our watches off Pity I don't wear any jewelery though

It does seem a little weird that he places it on the desk facing him, like some sort of ritual. In some ways it does sound like he is making a big point of the time aspect of the meeting. 'I don't want to be kept waiting', or 'I arrived on time and I'm making sure evryone else arrives on time too'.
If it was just that he finds the watch uncomfortable, I think a better approach would be just to have it in his pocket. There're usually clocks in meeting rooms anyway.
Hmm, is this over-analysis or what?

You must have an office big mouth? Everywhere does! Get him to come into the meeting and trump up with something like, "Why the h#ll do you keep taking your watch off like that?"
You might get an answer.

Maybe he does it so that he can see what the time is (how long the meeting is dragging on for) without having to visually look at the watch on his wrist. If you kep flicking your wrist to look at the time, someone will notice and call you on it.
The other theory about emulating the boss is more likely. You often see this stuff in packs of gorillas. The silverback (boss) will do something and the next most senior male will emulate it to show he is under control/proof that he has noticed. Or something
Cheers

I'd say the same... If you have your watch on the table in front of you, you can check the time without seeming obvious.
Plus copying behaviour is one of the key skills for promotion, according to some blurb on a course we were all forced to go on. You're supposed to act like you already hold the higher position, so that people come to assume that you are next in line and treat you accordingly.
