some friends of ours have been trying for a baby but have been unsuccessful

They have been referred to a specialist and the woman has had to have some kind of procedure where they stick a camera inside to look at all the equipment to make sure all is Ok. It turns out that all is fine and that the woman is ovulating so all ok there.

The problem is that my mate is embarassed at having to go and have his part of the equation looked into. He has to produce a sample and he's not sure he can do it

Anyone had any experience of having to face this. The only sample I've given has been a urine sample and that was bad enough

He's also worried about if he's firing blanks what that might do to the relationship

Having not been in this situation I can offer no advice

You can do the samples at home cos you have to provide evidence having had the snip (twice to provve blank firing status), I had to pop one off and trundle up to Macc hospital with my vial of goo, the woman on the counter said "is this your first one"

Semen samples have to be at the lab for testing within 1 hour of production, having been kept at body temp. The doctors and nurses are entirely understanding about it - after all, it's their daily business - so there's no need to be embarassed.

As to what it does to the relationship if the news is bad? Can't answer that one, but it's better to know than not to know, don't you think? They can then start, if needed, to adjust their sex life to improve the possibility of conception, or perhaps the distinctly grim option of IVF.

How long have they been trying for CC? It's not unusual for it to take a year or so of *attempting*. Supposed to cut down drinking and make sure you are operating at the correct time of the month etc.
