If I remember rightly, what the chap from the Immigration Advisory Service said was..

England isnt a "Nation" as such. It doesn have a Parliament. Wales does, Scotland does, Ireland does.. but its the United Kingdom Parliament, so as such England isnt a Nation - therefore can't be a nationality - we have to put UK. THATS why England doesnt appear on forms, apparently.

The Queen is the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.


Obviously Im paraphrasing the chaps words, Ive had a sleep since yesterday, but thats what I think he said. Amazing isn't it....

So if you're born here, grow up here and your parents are from somewhere else where are you from? Where can you relate to?
For the sake of argument. Someone with dark skin who does not look "English" [whatever that means] but has only ever seen their parents country of origin on a family holiday can hardly relate to that country totally when they have grown up in an English culture.

A long while ago, when the Blue Party was running the country a paper was draughted up stating you had to be third generation to be considered English. Perhaps this should be dusted off.

It's all the Uk. You're not scottish, welsh, (northern) irish, or english. You're all british.

I am half Irish and half Italian
But cut me open and it says Cymru, the land of my birth. I have always put Welsh on all official documentation since I was old enough to fill in forms. I have never had one returned or refused because of the nationality I put down. And if any form was going to be returned it would be a passport application, and I have had three and various visa's and permits over the years, non returned for having Welsh as a nationality.
Think of it like FIFA, if you have a national football team, then you have a right to put down that nation on all official forms.

Britain always reminds me of the colonial Great Britain, and we aint that anymore. I mean why change 'Great' Britain to United Kingdom if folk keep saying they are British. You never get any drop-down boxes in software etc which says 'British', it always says United Kingdom. Must be confusing as hell for other nations all this name changing. I was born and live in Scotland therefore I am Scottish, simple.

When i went to give intention to marry at my local registry office a couple of months ago i had the same conversation with the registrar. I told her i am English but she said it was not a valid nationality. I had to use British.

I've found this interesting, particularly since I worked in Russia.

It seems like there is a difference between citizenship (what it says on your passport, so British for most of us) and nationality, which my handy dictionary defines as 1. the state of being a citizen of a particular nation, but also 2. a body of people sharing common descent, history, language etc. So I guess you could put English where it asks for nationality, but not citizenship. Of course, looking at definition #1, it's a circular reference!

In Russia, their ID cards had nationality, which also included "Jewish" ([ab]used to full extent). This incensed me, but looking at the definition above, I suppose it's true.

When I worked in the EU and we had an application from some guy who wrote Scottish, I virtually threw it out on the spot. My logic being, if he can't get along inside the UK, what sort of fun is he going to have with 14 other countries?

Just because GB relates to britian, (not just britian) I would have thought it was the same as the UK?

It's like what I saw on the telly the other day - a programme about music culture. There was a scottish bloke who was really angry about the name "brit-pop" because it didn't seem to fit into his idea of scotland / ireland / england. Shurley it's not ment as a term to divide, but to bring together?

England, Scotland and Wales form Great Britain. This does not include Northern Ireland.

The UK is actually an abbreviation for "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

I am not bothered either way, English or British....whichever one takes my fancy at the time.
