Surely you weren't actually there? Ask them if they have photographic evidence of you being there in writing as you believe you were X number of miles away at that time. Also unless it is issued by the council/police then they will have a hard time getting the cash anyway. You must write asking them for evidence you were there as obviously you were not.

I'd ask for photographic evidence with the sign in the same picture.
It's worthwile pursueing the fact that you didn't recieve any notification that you had not paid by the council at the scene as well.

My mom just recieved a letter from a debt collection agency for parking ticket i got in her car almost 2 years ago (issued by Edinburgh City Council). I didn't bother to pay it and after about 6 months, the reminder letters stopped. I assumed it had been forgotten about/dropped. We didn't hear anything about it for over a year.... up until the debt collectors sent her the letter threatening court action.

You have to get them to quosh it in writing, if you make clear that you are sure you werent there and unless they have photographic evidence to the contrary you won't be paying the fine. Believe me they will drop it if you threaten to go to court, if they don't have a photo that is. Of course they won't as you weren't there.
Whatever you do don't ignore it.

A lot of these tickets are issued where the "issuer" writes down details of the tax disc also. This helps them prove they actually did see the car at the time.
That's how it works in Wakefield council area, anyway.
