May sound stupid, however I have a go kart that I think is 4 stroke however one of my friend thinks its a 2 stroke, how can I tell visibly the difference? I've only had the cart for a couple of weeks BTW!
Any help appreciated.

if it;s a two stroke it will require an oil petrol blend...that's the biggest give away

Someone will give you a better answer, but does it have a separate oil reservoir? 2-stroke needs oil mixing in to the fuel, 4 stroke doesn't (from my ridiculously limited knowledge of chain saws, so if you blow it up, don't blame me )

A two stroke (as I understand) does not have cams or valves and it usually sounds somewhat different to a 4 stroke.

In very simple terms, a 4-stroke will 'chug' and a 2-stroke will 'scream'. Have a look at the cylinder head - if it's got fins on it, it's likely (but not definitely) a 2-stroke.

Cheers

Yes it does have a separate oil chamber but with 2 different filler points which led my friend to beleive that one was for mixing with fuel and one for engine. I take it 2 strokes don't have a sepatare oil chamber, do you just put the oil in with the fuel?

My Gilera has a 'mixer tank' for 2T oil, yet you have to add other oil in different places (like hub oil etc)

My Piaggio needed a little oil/petrol mix in the petrol tank, but still had a seperate oil tank, and several other places to add oil.

Can be hard to tell, but having to put oil in all the time (like its being burnt) kinda gives it away!

One will smoke like hell when its started and revved it a little.

A two stroke will have a big bulge in the exhaust.

Many single cylinder high performance 4 stroke enigines and 2 exhaust outlets.

I think its a Honda engine and looks like a generator, doesn't have a high note just a low 'putt putt' noise. 2 oil filler caps next to the crankcase. When I filled it up with oil it smoked for about 30 seconds then cleared(could be too much oil).
I just don't want to destroy it, as I'm putting normal 20w50 oil in both compartments when one might be for 2t oil...arghhhh!

Question

Is the exhaust a straight pipe, with no bluge?

Smoking sounds like a two stroke.

Have you got a pic?

Doesn't really have an exhaust as such, just a small box next to the fuel tank.

It sounds to me that it's a four stroke.

The two fillers could be gear box and engine oil.

Sounds like a Honda generator powered 100cc 4 stoke, they have a small square box for the exhaust. Do you have a pull cable for the start ?

is there a drain/sump plug to drain oil out?if there is then it is a 4stroke.if it is a two stroke and you put 20/50 in it then it will stop running so you will soon find out.

There must be some kind of engine code or type on a plate on the engine? Just plug that into Google. But sounds like a 4-Stroke to me.

It might be a new 3 stroker. Its a cross between a Triumph and a haircut. The easy way to tell is to fire it up and hold it against your head. If it breaks down it is a Triumph. Otherwise it isn't
