by the Sugar Hill Gang.
So, so , so, so good. I was forced to boogey on down in the office!
Anyone else remember it first time round? They had the video on TOTP2 and they looked anything but part-pioneers of Rap music! LOL

My son says daddy I don't want to go to school
cos the teachers a jerk, he must think I'm a fool
and all the smoke reefa, I've think it'd be cheaper
if I just got a job, learn to be a street sweeper
to dance to the beat, shuffle my feet,
wear a shirt and tie and run with the creeps
cos it's all about money, ain't a damn thing funny,
you got to have a guard in this land of milk and honey
they pushed that girl in front of the train,
took her to the doctors sowed her arm on again
stabbed that man, right in his heart
gave him a transplant for a brand new start
I can't walk through the park cos it's crazy after dark, keep my hand on my gun cos they got me on the run,
I feel like an outlaw, broke my last dad's jaw, hear them say you want some more living on a cee-saw,
don't push me........
pauses for a breather......

A child was born, with no state of mind
Blind to the ways of mankind
God is smiling on you but he's frownin too,
Cause only god knows what you go through
You grow in the ghetto, living second rate
And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate
The places you play and where you stay
Looks like one great big alley way
You'll admire all the number book takers
Dogpitchers, pushers and the big money makers
Driving big cars, spending twenties and tens
And you wanna grow up to be just like them
Smugglers, scrambles, burglars, gamblers
Pickpockets, peddlers and even pan-handlers
You say I'm cool, I'm no fool
But then you wind up dropping out of high school
Now you're unemployed, all null 'n' void
Walking around like you're pretty boy Floyd
Turned stickup kid, look what you done did
Got send up for a eight year bid
Now your man is took and you're a May tag
Spend the next two years as an undercover ***
Being used and abused, and served like hell
Till one day you was find hung dead in a cell
It was plain to see that your life was lost
You was cold and your body swung back and forth
But now your eyes sing the sad sad song
Of how you lived so fast and died so young
Blind to the ways of mankind
God is smiling on you but he's frownin too,
Cause only god knows what you go through

Fantastic era of music. Influenced my direction in what I listened to.
Anyone remember the movie Beat Street ? Can't remember how good or bad it was, but nearly 20 years later can still remember almost all the lyrics of the theme tune!

UB - broke my last glass jaw
? We both stand corrected - full lyrics below.
Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just
Don't care
I can't take the smell, i can't take the noise
Got no money to move out, i guess i got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkie's in the alley with a baseball bat
I tried to get away, but i couldn't get far
Cause the man with the tow-truck repossessed my car
Chorus:
Don't push me, cause i'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How i keep from going under
Standing on the front stoop, hangin' out the window
Watching all the cars go by, roaring as the breezes
Blow
Crazy lady, livin' in a bag
Eating out of garbage piles, used to be a ***-hag
Search and test a tango, skips the life and then go
To search a prince to see the last of senses
Down at the peepshow, watching all the creeps
So she can tell the stories to the girls back home
She went to the city and got so so so ditty
She had to get a pimp, she couldn't make it on her
Own
Chorus:
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How i keep from goin' under
My brother's doing fast on my mother's t.v.
Says she watches to much, is just not healthy
All my children in the daytime, dallas at night
Can't even see the game or the sugar ray fight
Bill collectors they ring my phone
And scare my wife when i'm not home
Got a bum education, double-digit inflation
Can't take the train to the job, there's a strike
At the station
Me on king kong standin' on my back
Can't stop to turn around, broke my sacroiliac
Midrange, migraine, cancered membrane
Sometimes i think i'm going insane, i swear i might
Hijack a plane!
Chorus:
My son said daddy i don't wanna go to school
Cause the teacher's a jerk, he must think i'm a
Fool
And all the kids smoke reefer, i think it'd be
Cheaper
If i just got a job, learned to be a street sweeper
I dance to the beat, shuffle my feet
Wear a shirt and tie and run with the creeps
Cause it's all about money, ain't a damn thing
Funny
You got to have a con in this land of milk and
Honey
They push that girl in front of a train
Took her to a doctor, sowed the arm on again
Stabbed that man, right in his heart
Gave him a transplant before a brand new start
I can't walk through the park, cause it's crazy
After the dark
Keep my hand on the gun, cause they got me on the
Run
I feel like an outlaw, broke my last fast jaw
Hear them say you want some more, livin' on a
Seesaw
Chorus:

Ive got an electro compilation on CD, an official one done by streetsounds which only has about 10 tracks but all the classics, the smurf, al-naayfish, dmx way cool, just been onto ebay looking what old electro lps are fetching, not big money but certainly collectable all the same, some guy selling a boxed set on there as well of 1-7, crucial, uk etc.
cheers

How about Jam On It by Nucleus??
"Well Superman he came to town to see who he could rock
He blew away all the crews he faced until he reached the top
His speakers four storeys high with woofers made of steel......!
And remember what started all this off....Rockit by Herbie Hancock.

Scooby Snacks - lol you are right
That clears up a couple of other 'vaguenesses' I had over the lyrics, cheers ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
It strikes me that in the 20 odd years since this record was made, and the thousands of rap records that came in it's wake, The Message has has never really been bettered IMHO. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five really were the 'Beatles' of their genre.

Jam on it - great track!
I think the soulsonic force were early pioneers of electro/hip hop beats, their looking for the perfect beat album is a classic which pre-dates mr (jazz) hancock. Interestingly enough currently listening to old gary numan stuff and afrikaa bambataa cites him as influence for the stuff he was doing back in the day!

i really did like GrandMaster Flash, just having a laff to myself thinking of all the music my parents had to suffer on my screaming stereo, that they bought me. !! PMSL
oh and i had to do this. :
Artist: Doug E Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew
Album: Oh My God!
Title: The Show
Note:
D = Doug E Fresh
R = MC Ricky D (aka Slick Rick)
B = Both
G = Get Fresh Crew
Intro
Ladies and Gentleman...the most exciting stage show you've ever
witnessed...appearing live...Doug E Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew.
Verse 1
R: Excuse me Doug E Fresh...
D: Yes!
R: Have you ever seen a show with fellas on the mic
with one minute rhymes that don't come out right
They bite
D: They never write
R: That's not polite. Am I lyin'?
D: No, you're quite right
R: Well tonight on this very mic you're about to hear
B: We swear, the best darn rappers of the year
R: So!
D: So!
R: Cheerio!
D: Yell...
R: Scream...
B: Bravo! Also, if you didn't know this is called The Show
Verse 2
R: A-yo, Doug
D: What?
R: Put ya Bally's on
D: Yo, Rick, I was about to but I need a shoehorn
R: Why?
D: Because these shoes always hurt my corns
R: Six minutes...six minutes...six minutes Doug E Fresh, you're on
Uh uh on, Uh uh on, Uh uh-uh uh-uh uh uh on
Uh uh on, Uh uh on, Uh uh-uh uh-uh uh uh on
Ooh ooh ooh, uh uh on
D: Here we go...
G: Here we go...
D: Come on...
G: Come on...
D: A-here we go...
G: Here we go...
D: Come on...
G: Come on...
D: Yo! Where's Will and Barr?
R: Well I don't know, they're late
Told em them the time...oh, I forgot the date
D: Man you did it again, oh no!
G: No, here we go, come on
Here we go, come on
Here we go, did we miss the show?
D: Nuh, nuh na nana no we didn't
R: Word
D: Nuh nana nana nana, no we didn't
R: W-w-w-Word
D: No we didn't
R: Well don't get us wrong
'Scuse me Doug E, 'Scuse me Doug E,
'Scuse me Doug E Fresh, you're on
Uh uh on...
Verse 3
D: Well it started up on 8th Avenue
When I made up the name called the...
G: Get Fresh Crew!
D: It was me, my two DJ's Chill Will and Barry B
and my right hand man Ricky D
I used to rap and sing, makes sounds and things
And for example, here's a telephone ring...
R: Hello? Is Doug E Fresh in?
D: No, he's not in right now
D: But anyway, no more delay
Just check out the new style I display
Now ya gotta be (fresh)
To rock with (fresh)
And I'm D.O.U.G.I.E (fresh)
And I'm known for the... [fx: Doug E style beatbox]
Not for the... [fx: Fat Boys style beatbox]
The human beatbox or the entertainer
No other title could fit me plainer
In a passing generation I am a remainer
And I'm also known as the beatbox trainer
Cashin' checks, make sound FX
And after I finish rockin' Slick Rick is on next
R: Ya know it
D: Slick Rick...
R: Well, here's a little somethin' that needs to be heard
Doug, I was goin' Downtown
D: Word Rick?
R: Word
D: Sure
R: All alone, no-one to be with
Stepped on the D-train at 205th
I saw a pretty girl
D: So?
R: So I sat beside her
Then she went [fx: roar] like she was Tony the Tiger
I said, oh no, there's been a mistake
Honey, my name's Slick Rick not Frostie Flakes
D: Oh, golly wally
R: She was raisin' hell
She said, oh my name is Maggie but call me Michelle
Michelle, ma belle
Sont les mots qui vont, tres bien ensemble
Tres bien ensemble
Bust a move, we show and prove
A-yo Doug, do that record Jam on the Groove
Outro
D: As you can see, most definitely
We are (fresh)

Stepped on the D-train at 205th
I saw a pretty girl
D: So?
R: So I sat beside her
Then she went [fx: roar] like she was Tony the Tiger
I said, oh no, there's been a mistake
Honey, my name's Slick Rick not Frostie Flakes

She said, oh my name is Maggie but call me Michelle
Michelle, ma belle

As I was born in 1970, I was early teens when this stuff started coming out. I used to breakdance outside Sainsbury's in Purley on a saturday afternoon on a piece of lino stuck to a flattened cardboard box with my mates, 'wog' box on full blast. The Electro albums are classics now (and not available on CD IIRC) and the same can be said about the Streetsounds albums too.
The Message is probably one of my favourites, and I have a sot spot for Jam On It.
Don't know how sad this is but I was well into Paul Hardcastle's 19 - I had about eight or nine different 12" versions, with the last being 19 - The Final Story. Fantastic...."and then we came back and everyone wanted to know, god, what happened to those guys over there? Gotta be something wrong somewhere. We did what we had to do. Gotta be something wrong somewhere.
And people wanted us to be ashamed of what it had made us. They had no idea what it had been like for 5 or 10 years now.
All I wanted to do was come home.......wasn't worth it......"

Do any of you guys remember a tune called The Wave Craze? It had the lyric: "All the pearls in the World, would never make me love another greasy haired girl, in the Wave Craze" I can't remember who it was by.
