every morning i hear on the radio something like ... "M1 closed at junction 3 because of 2 lorries/cars/vans have collided and gone through the central reservation".
do the police ever prosecute anyone for these ?
and has anyone ever tracked down one of the ******* that caused the accident and sued them for loss of earnings ?

I dealt with a 65 vehicle pile up on the M4 once and had 64 prosecutions for careless driving. The lead vehicle had slowed because of tail back and got smacked up the chuff, so I could'nt stick him on.
Most Motorway accidents even the major pile ups are caused by minor lapses in concentration, and although it would be quite easy to prosecute, it is considered in most prosecution departments that it is not really in the public interest to take it any further, but easier to let the insurance companies sort it out.

Wow I must admit that is good to hear, but then again I expect that of those 64, as with the car at the front of the pile-up, there were many that stopped in time only to get shunted from behind into the cars they'd initially managed to avoid.![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
But what proof would they have that they did not hit the car in front because they were being careless? Their cars would be mushed at both ends anyhow? How many of these drivers were actually convicted?

To be honest, I don't know. From the reconstruction I think there were three who had been pushed into the vehicle in front from behind but these vehicles were committing other offences which is why the tally of prosecutions was so high.
Normally when I have dealt with 30+ vehicle RTA's normally about 30% are prosecuted. As with all things it depends on circumstances and fact.
