Question

I was trimming my bushes in the garden the other day and noticed a birds nest. I stopped when I saw the nest, It had three green eggs in about the size of the small creame eggs you get. Does any one know what time they should hatch? I think they should have hatched by now but not sure. Is it an old nest? How do I tell?

Cheers

Jer

it's best not to trim the bush without the birds permission first

birds can get very touchy going near their bush, they don't like to feel that their territory has been invaded and more than likely once you have ruffled the bush they will go elsewhere

Once I've got my Great Crested Warbler custume on my fella, I can delve into any bush and the birds are only too keen for me to touch their eggs.

Sorry, pure Friday afternoon boredom. I'm the only b$gger left in the office!

This is a serious question. I left the eggs and nest after I noticed it. The eggs were a minty green colour and the nest was the size of my hand. Any ideas when they should hatch as I want to cut it down.

No idea when they'll hatch but unless you don't mind killing the chicks you can't really go near that nest This happened a lot at a farm I lived on once. Keep an eye out for a parent flying back.

Eggs sound like Hedge Sparrow, also known as a Dunnock. Looks like a regular sparrow, but with more pointed beak. Some first broods are already out and about so they shouldn't be long to hatch. But I'd bet that since you trimmed the hedge, if they weren't deserted before then they will be now. Just keep and eye on the nest and if the parents don't return within half an hour or so, they maybe never will.

Richard.

PS Shame this turned out to be a serious qestion

Sparrows are getting rarer all the time ATM ( ) might be worth ringing the RSPB & logging the sighting/hatching.

Hi

Over the weekend I spotted them. The female (the one on the nest) was dark brown with an orange beak (I think). it also had what looked like an orange ring round it's eye. It was about half the size of a crow maybe smaller. Any ideas?
The male was the same but darker.
Yesterday I was watching out my window and the male bird was getting hassle from two magpies. One magpie was chasing him and the other was looking for its nest in another hedge in the garden.
With the magpies and my cat I can't see them lasting long. Any ideas how I can help them out?

Cheers

Jer

Jer, it's a Blackbird! (Cue Carpet Cleaner )

The blue-green eggs have small brown speckles, and are about an inch long?

Blackbirds are quite aggressive, but Magpies can be nasty buggers, and persistant. A bit like cats...

Brambling Eggs??

11-12 days incubation.

If it is a Brambling can we all come round and have a look at your birds bush? Very rare in Western Europe at this time of year.

Red face

If the bird has laid an egg in its bush, then I would steer well clear of it,and wouldnt bother trying to trim it either!

Everytime Ive been near a birds bush with a set of shears, its fcuked off and never come back!

All birds are quite aggressive whatever colour they are, especially when you take shears to their bush!
