ok i have a car im selling to a chap he has also agreed to by my cherished plate that i have on a retention cirtificate to go with it.
so he will want to put the plate on it asap.
1 what do i do with the cirtificate sign it over to him? or just give him it unsigned?
does he have to send it off and the £25 fee to put it in his name before he can register it to the car?
oh and the cherished plate was on the car im sellin him anyway until 2 months ago DOH! should left it on there lol

In March I sold my previous Subaru to a franchised dealer and wanted my plate.
The routine is that you must visit your local DVLA office and fill in the appropriate retention application which costs £105.
The problem is that until you get the log book (V5) back made out in your name and on the 'old'/ a substitute reg, what do you do ?
When you've paid your fee, filled in the form and the local DVLA office has given you a new tax disc, they send the other bits to DVLA HQ. 5 weeks later I got the log book back with the old reg on and a separate retention certificate for my cherishe plate.
This delay is typical accordingly to the dealer, who could not sell the car until I'd received the paperwork back.
Best advice ? Find your local DVLA office on the net and call / go and see them.

Ah sorry, mis-read.
My experience above is partly relevant though - in that there could well be a delay with the DVLA. You still have to follow the procedure on your V778 though by transferring the rights to the plate to someone else.
The bit that I'm not sure about is timing. ie If you apply for the change (in nominee?) whether your buyer is allowed to do anything BEFORE he receives the V5 in HIS name for the current reg on the car ?
Don't know where you are, but why don't you go along to your local DVLA office and have a chat with them. Mine's 20 miles away but I've always found them very helpful.
I reckon it may be a case of him having to wait before he can legally apply it to the car.
