Any ideas for the cheapest way to learn French?

...other than going there! Recently looked into the cost of nightclasses and book and tape courses and was just appalled at the prices they want you to spend these days! (have you seen how much linguaphone want for a book and some tapes these days? Good grief!)
Can anyone reccommend a more modest way of brushing up on my rusty French? Any courses/nightclasses in Edinburgh that anyone can reccommend? Any books/tapes that work well? Any other resources out there for those of modest means?
Merci beaucoup!

They don't all speak English and the ones that do pretend they don't.

All the French you ever need to learn, right here :
Parlez vous anglais?
I've currently got a couple of language books on order from a certain online book store - one for German and one for French, so if they manage to get me fluent in French, I'll let you know!
Also come across this site http://www.parlez-vous.org/ which might be of interest.
