Forget all this so called smart bombing in Iraq......
Rasie a toast tonight for the 133 crew of RAF 617 squadron who 60 years ago today carried out what was then and probably still is now the most difficult and precise aerial assualt ever attempted; attacking the Moehne,Eder and Sopre dams.
Brave, brave men. Respect is due.

My uncle was a co-pilot bomb aimer in a Lancaster during the war, he flew over 50 odd missions over Germany alone and is still alive today and I am so proud to call him my uncle, because of what he did for his country, as I said i misread your post.

My Uncle worked with Barnes Wallis all those years ago. Still talks about the war even now.
My mother also lived across the road from Guy Gibson during the war when she ws a little lass.
Anyone remember the name of the dog in the film then?
Chip.

Yes, but if I quote it on here this post will be deleted.
It never ceases to amaze me how people continue to go on and on about the dambusters raid, when it was, and was after the war admitted as, a piecee of PR. It stopped the German war effort for 36 hours!!!
Sure, the men who took part were brave, but we forget so easily the ones who went night after night after night........IF they came back:
Alcazar

I raise my glass to any person who fought in WW2 as I have mucho respect for what they did. Have only just been watching Band of Brothers from the start and that gives you a good idea of the conditions our troops encountered. A pity its such an americanised view as from what Ive read we (and the canadians) had far more difficult missions over the 24 mile stretch of beaches including Sword, Gold and Juno, compared to the yanks at their "infamous" omaha and utah beach landings. But hey thats yanks for you

I enjoyed Band of Brothers.
However, as far as the Americans are concerned, the War only started on 6th of June 1944, and they were the only ones fighting against the enemy.
They wouldn`t even send warships to protect our convoys in the Atlantic up until then.
Allies, my ****.

Dogs name was dubbed over when the Beeb showed the film last year.
"C'mon .....boy" was how the dog was called. Political correctness gone mad again.

These guys knew that they had less than a 50/50 chance of returning from such a low level mission and they are indeed true heros.
I shall raise my glass.
