Halal

There is a political debate running at present, regarding the continued legality of Halal slaughter of animals in the UK. The word Halal simply means lawful under islam, and excludes such items as pork. Animals must also be killed in the name of allah. However, the method of slaughter is to to slit the throats of fully conscious, non-stunned animals, and have them bleed to death. I would be delighted to see an end to this despicable and immoral ritual (why was it granted in the first place?), but I think our authorities are far too soft to make a decision that may offend the mighty muslim cause, even though it offends me.

It also amazes me that anyone buys so called 'Allah blessed' meat from the dirty, smelly premises that normally present themselves as Halal butchers.
The whole practice of killing animals in this way is completely at odds with the UK culture - amazes the tree huggers haven't fastened themselves to the pavements outside the butchers yet (other than 'cos they're usually so filthy and fly infested!)

So this is less humane than herding them, hundreds at a time into a factory, with floors covered in the blood & excrement of their relatives, then sticking a gun to their forehead then?

errrr - course it's more humane.
which would you prefer, instant death by electrocution or 10 minutes of writhing in agony waiting to die after your jugular's been sliced? either way you're going to be herded into somewhere unpleasant before the action starts.

i think kosher you can kill it how you like, it only becomes kosher once blessed by a rabbi (rabbis work in food factories in Israel, standing at the end of production lines for high volume blessings!)
though I might be wrong ....

Gordo:
Apparantly not:
"Only a trained kosher slaughterer (shochet) whose piety and expertise have been attested to by rabbinic authorities is qualified to slaughter an animal. The trachea and esaphagus of the animal are severed with a special razor-sharp, perfectly smooth blade causing instantaneous death with no pain to the animal."
Steve.

Don't think this will get much exposure before the moderators feel compelled to slap a padlock on the topic.
I agree entirely with Daves wish to end "despicable and immoral ritual" but Gordos assertion that it's "at odds with the UK culture" surely can't be true.
I'm happy to be corrected.
But have the Jews not been slaughtering animals in this manner for decades without a single word of dissent.

I think if it's kept on topic about the pros and cons about religious tradition in a modern society, it'll be OK. If it descends into a slanging match about one or two religions, it'll be vape time.
I delivered kosher chickens around North London for 6 mths, driving a 7.5 tonner. The rabbis who slaughtered them got paid a fortune, I heard. I never watched, but I believe it was also throat-slitting.

Wanted to add - as I hear, both the above traditional and the Western modern methods of killing are both seriously stressful for the animal, so plenty of room for a good animal rights argument there. Didn't Fast Bloke say he worked for one day in a slaughterhouse and couldn't hack it?
