Meet a contestant from Big Brother UK
Monday, June 23 2003:
After the eviction on Sunday of Angola's Bruna, the sleepy housemates were called to the lounge at about 8.15am on Monday for a surprise encounter: meeting a new contestant who was all the way from the UK.
The swop began on Sunday, shortly after Bruna left the house, when Gaetano from Uganda was called into the diary room and informed that he was leaving on a surprise trip. He was then blindfolded and whisked away into the unknown.
On Monday at about 8am, Cameron, a 32-year-old from the remote Orkeny Islands to the north of Britain, sat nervously in the diary room waiting to be introduced to his new housemates.
As he told the rest of the contestants later, on Sunday Big Brother in the UK had asked for "a housemate" to come to the diary room. He went, and was told he had 10 minutes to pack his bag as he was going to be an ambassador for Big Brother. Ten minutes later he was driven out of the UK house - in a car with darkened windows - and was then put on a private jet and flown to South Africa.
While the rumpled-looking Cameron waited in the diary room in South Africa, the rest of the housemates were ordered to gather in the lounge. Alex, wrapped in a blanket, snoozed on the couch as his fellow competitors, all looking half-asleep, struggled out of their rooms.
But the atmosphere rapidly changed from one of resentment to one of excitement as Big Brother told the housemates what had happened, and Sammi from Ghana was the first to dash into the diary room to welcome their new guest with a big hug.
Cameron, clearly jet-lagged from his trip, was shown around the house, and introduced to the macaws, but decided not to take a shower when the hot water was turned on for the daily shower hour.
