Bloody hell - what a great new album! Its like going back in time to when they weren't the 'MTV friendly' band they became.

Good return by the boys to what they do best!

So am I the only person in the whole world that prefers Re-Loaded to anything else they done?

Question

Well, I listened to the Load / Reload albums and thought they were naff

Only heard St Anger off the new one, and thought that was pants too

Still, I'm happy to be stuck in my 80s time warp with Kill em all, Lightning and Puppets

I must be the only Metallica fan who rates them on all albums.

Gimme more of them!!!

It is Metallica Month on MTV over here in Australia and they were showing collections last night! Awesome stuff.
There is also a competition to see them in the USofA in association with Kerrang - going to enter that one! LOL.

They wrote around 35 songs recently and only released 11 for the St Anger album, so I guess when sales drop there'll be another out soon? Hopefully not too long in the future.

They seem to just keep going! That's great IMHO!

I'll have to look up a couple of sites to see when they are touring Australia next - other than that, it's a return trip to Europe or the States for me!!!!

I think the new album is pretty average really. On first play I actually turned it off about half way through. It did grow on me after a while, but still don't think it's anything special. Some good moments but could do to be about 20 minutes shorter I do see why they went for the fuzzy, raw, "back to basics" sound though - if the album had been well produced it would be all too obvious how weak some of the songs are...

St Anger as a comeback song is naff. Really.

They've done some good stuff, but mainly in the early days.

St Anger as a track would not persuade me to buy the album - there's just nothing to it!

It took me a while to get used to St Anger as a single, it certainly didn't hit me the first time it was played.

Having listened to it several times now, it certainly appeals.

As was posted on a similar thread a while back, I saw then live at the Download Festival - they rocked!!! Nothing like seeing 35,000 people trying to cram into a little tent to see/hear Metallica.
Also watched Rock AM Ring live on MTV, very good concert, shame I can't go to Reading festival (due to mates wedding - dammit!)
I hail Reload and the Black album as top albums (I have them all), and S&M for it's sheer audacity at mixing an orchestra with hard rock.

I'd like to see Metallica lined up against a wall and machine gunned for the whole Napster business. Remember that advert the drummer did on MTV - "Hey kids, stealing other peoples things is like, wrong". I'll bet when they filmed that video in some prison, he went round saying the same thing to all the inmates.

Saw them live, fantastic, S&M without doubt the best album \ DVD, St anger (album) is a *real* letdown, like a metallica cover band in a shed.

Guess everyone takes their own favourite time period then?

I prefer the newer sound to the last 2 albums. Video is pretty cool too.

I'm for the original sound of 'Kill em all' period myself.

Problem with the new sound is the songs are still an average of 8 minutes long, but there's very little going on now to break up the monotony. Stripped down only really works when things are (relatively) short and snappy IMHO. My player already has a repeat function, so I don't need Metallica to play every song twice in a row for me thankyou

I used to love them when i was younger.

They suck now IMHO

went downhill after black album.

Master of puppets, kill em all, etc all works of genuis in the metal world.

New stuff=monotonous boring turd.

Rushed out at 7am years back on the morning 'until it sleeps' was released- bought both cds and the 10" limited red vinyl-listened to them once, didnt like them. Vinyl remains unopened and unplayed to this day.

Cracking live show-but only because they play the classic stuff-before they went soft/crap/boring.

Pah- for real metal listen to slayer (not that i do anymore btw)

Seen 'em 7 times at last count. For me the Masters/Justice era will never be bettered (and not just by Metallica, by anybody IMO) but I really love St Anger. With the exception of Load (which still had the standout track 'Bleeding Me') and to a certain extent Reload all their albums have been a cut above anything else that's been around at the time - there's just a 'rightness' about the stuff.

With regard to live performances I do think they are the best live band I've ever seen. If you where at Milton Keynes'93 or Monsters of Rock (95?) when they played 'Nothing Else Matters' and you were a part of that crowd and experienced THAT atmosphere then you'll understand........

Perfectly put. I'll download St Anger to try-before-I-buy but there's no way I'll lay out the green stuff on a Metallica release without hearing it, like I used to do.
