Advice on straightening my nose
#1

For the past 4 years, since running face first into a patio door I thought was open (not funny
) I have had to live with a slightly bent bridge to my nose. I also find it's slightly blocked in one side. I'm just seeing if this type of thing is covered on the NHS, and what the proceedure would be (GP?), and what kinda operation it is?
Crookedly,
Rik.

You should not have to much a problem having it fixed on the NHS esp if your septum is deviated & causing a blockage.
Go see your GP who will refer you to an ENT consultant. However, as mentioned earlier you will need a general anesthetic to have your nose re-broken & re-set straight.
Ideally you should have seen your Dr after the injury who would have referred you before it had set bent!

The operation looks fairly gruesome to the squeamish. They pass a chisel type tool up your hooter and crack all the bone up, then while its all squidgy they put a cast over your nose to mold it into the right shape until it sets and reheals. You can also look forward to 2 cracking black eyes!
As for whether its available on the NHS, probably, but expect a long wait and cancellations due to "more important" operations.
My cousin got his nose broken, waited in casualty for 7 hours before being told to "go home and come back later". He didnt bother and ended up having the cartilidge removed a year later cos it healed all wonky and affected his breathing.

Sorry, I wasn't intentionally trying to scare you off.... it can't be that bad as people actually pay to have it done all the time!
I should add that I am not a medical practitioner and you shouldn't be put off by my slightly negatively orientated reply!
