What do you think the education department should have done in this case?

My heart tells me that they should have allowed the boy time off, even if they just turned a blind eye.

How many are playing truant and not playing chess?
At least he has the support of his school regarding missed work.
He'll have to earn a bit more to pay for tutors though.

His parents want to deny him 20% of his general education and social interaction? I say let him do an hour a day after school...and a summer school for chess.
