Heading off to Cornwall soon for a bit of a break, a couple of things...

- Can anyone recommend any good roads there ?

- Are there plenty of Shell garages who have Optimax? Had a look on multimap and there were a Shell Stations, but didn't seem to be any west of Truro.

Cheers
Peter

PS - if you are from down that way, keep an eye out for a silver STi8! I haven't been spotted in 4 years on Scoobynet

Tel's very unspecific answer;

ALL the roads in Cornwall are excellent. Just get a decent map and follow your nose. I go down to Wadebridge each year, near the north coast, and the driving is excellent. The only downside in my experience is weight of holiday traffic, and tractors. But what can you do?

All the Shell garages in Cornwall do now do Optimax. I don't have my Shell atlas with me here, but i thought there was one in/near Penzance. If nobody confirms sooner, i'll have a look at home later, though i assume Shell's website shows all the locations too..?

Cheers Tel

Had another look on mulitmap (that's what you link to from the Shell site) and did a different search - 2 more garages appeared in Hayle, just north of Penzance, and Cambourne.

West country roads are generally great but you have to watch out on the narrow ones, lots of blind bends. The general rule is that if you see skid marks on the road before a bend-slow down! Probably too much traffic during the day to enjoy the driving but it gets better after dark.

Have a good holiday.

I am going down on Saturday for a week, so if a silver Audi S3 flashes you, you'll know why

I'm going down to St Ives a week on Sat. There are some good roads towards Lands End from St Ives, but be warned - they have a habit of narrowing badly, and having severe corners without any warning.

Mind you, the scenery is almost worth going slowly to appreciate

If you go to St Ives, pop in either the Sloop (on the front) or the Golden Lion for a pint. Both fantastic pubs!

On your way down there, don't just trudge down the A30, go across Dartmoor on the B3212. Good fun!

Just got back today - great roads!!! Although some were just a bit too narrow to have fun on!!! Managed to clock up a few more miles on the car and can only now say I have "driven" my STi8

Managed to get by without running out of Optimax. The Shell stations in Penzance and Cambourne seem to have closed down (arrived as directed only to find a derelict forecourt on both occasions), but I did find one on the edge of Falmouth.

Thanks for all the advice.

Peter

Picked my parents up from ST Ives on saturday. I didnt get chance to go on any decent roads well i wouldnt have wanted too as i left the scoob at home and drove the cheaper option LOL.

Only decent road i was on was the A30 the one where you leave the motorway. Ive never seen a double lane road sweep up and down like that ever well not from round here. If i was in the scoob or any decent car you could have hit top speed easily and safely and drove for a long time without slowing.

One thing what did shake me up a bit is i was tootling along and i was about to switch to the outside lane i indicated, checked mirror about to go and from no where an old porche went by at i guess a good 150/160 and what made me laugh after the shock an evo 8 trying to keep up LOL. If i hadnt of double checked id have been a goner as well as the porsche. Taught me one thing im never doing anything like that again unless im going to learn the hard way.

Anyway story over have fun there as there are some cracking roads down that way next time ill bring the scoob.

There is a blanket speed limit of 40 mph on Dartmoor because of the sheep and wild ponies. But the scenery is outstanding

Did about 700 miles around Cornwall at the beginning of June. Many of the roads are great and not too much traffic. The narrow ones are lethal though when combined with the locals' driving style and you really need to apply the "2 x stopping distance" rule rigorously to survive...

Apparently accident statistics for Cornwall residents are 60% above the national average.

I lived in Cornwall for 20years - there are indeed some great roads there. Just keep a look out for the dreaded cameras as they're spreading quite rapidly.

The back lanes are fantastic in the right car (205gti is the best ) and it was only all those bloody 'emits' that held us locals up
