they have to test it using a certain piece of equipment-they cant just say 'oh you have tints you cant drive it'
if it was foudn to be too dark, they would have to issue a prohibition order on the car, or give you a pink 14 day vehicle defect rectalfication notice.
Yet more waste of taxpayersmoney- i bet half the cops doing it dont even know the laws regarding tints

How would this work with say, vans?
We have builders and such like who board up their rear windows.
We also have the police camera vans with dark rear windows.
I can only assume that if there is a window there then it should have to apply.
By that I mean a panel van (windowless from factory) would obviously be exempt.
Any thoughts on this or is it just a "car" thing?

Just found this.
UK law currently states that the driver and front passenger windows can only be treated with a light tint. The back windows can be treated with any shade. The front windscreen must be free of any shading, apart from a 6" strip across the top

there's a story about it in the mail , page 37 , today , this couple were given an hour to get their car off the road. windscreens have to allow 75% of light in and side windows 70% if not they will nick you . there were 4o drivers stopped at the weekend with 6 ordered off the road .

The windscreen and FRONT side windows have to let in a certain amount of light (I *think* it's 75% and 70& but don't quote me on that!). Any other window can be blanked off - which is why there is no problem with *white van man* etc.
Now, as a motorcyclist who gets picked on for dark visors I see absolutely no reason why people with windscreens darker than the law allows should get away with it either!
On a 'Captain Sensible' note, I would be somewhat less than pleased if someone pulled out in front of me on my bike with the 'Sorry mate I didn't see you' excuse when it was in fact true. 'cos his windows were too effing dark! I would make sure his windows could be seen though after that!
Oh yes, also agree that the police should be out catching burglars but that takes work doesn't it ....
