Import duty and charges, help please
#1
I want to purchase something from Italy.
It is, I understand an EU state, and therefore no import duty is charged, is this correct?.
The item will be shipped to me in this country and I understand I will have to pay VAT on the item as it is well over the 'gift' limit level.
The thing I want to know is, what other charges am I likely to encounter?.
The item has a cost of £2,800 including shipping.
Does anyone have an idea of a 'worst case scenario' cost?.
I'm looking at £3290 with the VAT and hopefully no import duty. Now I understand there will be handling charges by Parcel force or whoever handle delivery this side, do they charge a percentage?, or a set amount?.

I buy from amazon.co.uk and ship to Germany often, only pay VAt in UK. If I ship from Jersey or US I pay customer and VAT. No intercountry VAT or Duties, thats the basis of free trade in EC.

Ok I read it again, it looks like it's a maybe.
It does look like import duty is not applicable though.
I bet the 'maybe' will apply for me

The EU is a customs union and member States charge a common tariff on goods which are imported from outside the EU. Afterwards those goods can be sent from one EU member State to another without any liability to pay further customs duties. In the same way, goods which are manufactured within the EU circulate between Member States free of customs duty. However, the goods may be subject to other EU State taxes such as excise duty and VAT
