114 MPH in a 30... He was trying to claim he was doing 60, which is bad enough...
I can't see anything wrong with this data being used if it's available. OK, it smacks of big brother, but in this case I'm happy.

Hello
I think that the original poster is just surprised (as I am) that that kind of data is being recorded.
I thought that airbags were pretty dumb devices, with no ability to record that kind of information.
Steve.

horrified by the thought of the system storing this data, glad in this case that it did.
thinking about it, it can only be used against you if you do something stupid so its a good thing.

...and how often is the "airbag speedo" calibrated??
I am surprised that it is allowed as evidence. What if your wheels had left the ground and spun at max revs? Too many possible influences![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Only in America!

Data recorders in air bags can record a car's speed and deceleration and other data such as the pressure on a brake pedal at the time of a crash.
An estimated 10 million vehicles in the US are fitted with such recorders, which vehicle manufacturers began putting in vehicles in the 1990s to test air bag performance.
In recent year court prosecutors have begun using information from these data recorders, the existence of which most drivers will be unaware of, in criminal prosecutions, AP reports.

All sounds a bit over the top to me. The fact it says a few seconds before the crash. How accurate are these things? Im not saying the guy isnt guilty but I can see some dubious decisions being made over such data. I would have thought more significance would be taken from the impact speed as judged by the crash investigators i.e. skid marks and physical damage to the girls car.

What a load of sh!te!! Totally Big Brother! He was in the wrong but that is not the point IMHO....... It's a case of if we(meaning the police) can get this to stick then it's well done. The problem being is that there are POSSIBLEY circumstances that give these readings. Who's to say that (as mentioned above) the wheels didn't leave the road while the guy had his foot to the floor. He may have paniced, hit the brake.....and caught the accelerator......hit a kerb.....front wheel bounce......spin to 100 mph + and BANG!! hit the stationary object.
It's all a case of getting the figures so the polititions look good.
Any other case and that type of evidence would be laughed at!!!!
