Squizz, the thing is, we can't stop parents from smoking around their children, some will continue regardless, but withdrawing medical treatment makes it worse for the child. We can do something about that. You're right that we basically agree though.
midget1500, mentioning the money issue was an aside, intended to chuck a bit of fuel on the fire. It was not related to whether expectant mothers should smoke. If you check, you'll see I agree they shouldn't. In fact, if you knew me, you'd know I about as vehemently anti-smoking as it is possible to be.
I don't see how you can say that it's only women that shouldn't expose their kids to cigarette smoke and that fathers are different. Both parents should be responsible for safeguarding the health of their kids.

Stopping people smoking = loss of tax revenue
Catching people speeding = increased revenue from fines
Hmmm, I wonder why they are more interested in speeding. After all, both kill people, and I'm sure that's what the government is really worried about.
Anyway, speeding is illegal, smoking is not. How can you fine someone for doing something legal?!
[Disclaimer: no need for a debate on whether speed kills. We all know it's a lot more complicated than that]

Isn't smoking when preggers supposed to stunt your unborn child's growth?????
My mum didn't smoke whilst carrying my brother, he's skinny as a skinny thing.....
Mumsie recently admitted to smoking whilst carrying me.....
Didn't bloody work in my case did it?

Commitment to be responsible for the welfare of another human life should come from both parents, not just the one who has to actually carry the child.
If a women decides to give up smoking during pregnancy, the very least she should expect is that her partner supports her by doing the same.

I work in a hospital and regularly pass through the Maternity dept.
It makes me so mad seeing heavily pregnant women stood outside SMOKING!
How irresponsible is that, they are totally aware of the clear and present danger that poses to their unborn child.
F*ckin pr*cks

Couldn't agree with you more. Week minded idiots. Then they will wonder why little Billy is struggling at school. That'll be because you smoked his brain down to the size of a walnut you moron.

What I never understand is women who give up smoking while they're pregnant, then start again afterwards. Surely after 9 months "on the wagon" continuing to abstain is a lot easier? And an atmosphere of **** surely can't be good for a baby anyway.

Uh, carl, fathers are just as able to smoke round their kids as mothers, and many blokes continue to smoke when their wives are pregnant, thus exposing them to smoke, so why specifically single out the women for attack? It may have just been the way you worded it, but it sounds a tad unreasonable.
I agree that it's disgraceful though. Parents should not smoke around their kids.

Hows this for an idea.
"They can smoke as much as they like outside the grounds of the hospital, but if they're deemed to be under the care of the hospital, then they should be refused treatment if caught."
F*cking hipocrites... They might get the idea then.

Agree with the above, but waiting for the "It's their choice brigade" to get on their high horses.
Should be an interesting thread, where are you C?

Smoking kills 250,000 people a year. Do we really need any more justification to ban it. The only good thing to come out of it is the tax pays for the health service. Disgusting habit for weak minds.

one of my friends was a very heavy smoker of red marlboros but did give up when she found out she was pregnant. She still wants cigarettes because she liked smoking although her husband admits it was a habit for him and he didn't want to smoke. She is now pregnant with her second child and luckily hasn't started smoking again. I think its more to do with how much the cigarettes cost now as to why she'll stay quitting though!

Eh? How are they hypocrites?
Visiting a hopsital for treatment to safeguard the health of their infant, and yet harming it by smoking.
Yup, sounds like it to me. Anyone else?

1) Most of the people I know who smoke want to give up
2) Lots of mothers (rightly) give up when they are pregnant
3) Why do they then start again?

So Squizz, we should potentially let a child suffer because of a choice the parent made, that the child had no say over? Good thinking!
Some smokers would argue that they pay so much extra in tax on cigarettes that they should have priority healthcare. What they pay more than makes up for what they cost, if I remember correctly. Maybe we should argue that one for a bit.

Are we talking about smoking here?
Or my farcical premise that treatment should be withheld from mothers who smoke? (I agree this will never occur).
Your statement applies equally to both.
Forgive me, It's Friday. We both wholeheartedly agree that smoking around children or pregnant mothers, or by pregnant mothers is a BAD THING.

GREAT - ******* WONDERFUL
someone makes a VALID point about mothers risking their own health and much worse that of the unborn child and TK & friends kick off about MONEY, ohhh taxes, how is this hypocritical, etc.
ARGHGHGHGHGHGHHHH.
So, it's the mothers choice then, she might as well go out and get pissed every night as well then.
She chose to have the child (or if not, at least chose to keep it) so therefore should at least look after it as best she can. don't flaff off about the husband smoking etc, that's a different proposition.

I say let them carry on smoking! Think of all that lovely tax smoking gives to the government considering they are nearly £5 a packet now. The other advantage is that smokers are likely to die much younger than non smokers which means they will be less of a drain on the state as they won't be claiming a state pension for as long.

<more fuel to the fire>
With the ongoing campaign to "dumb down" the nation with the likes of Big Brother, a few more mentally deficient kids aren't really going to be noticed.
[Disclaimer: this is a tongue-in-cheek statement for those of you who can't spot it]

Another favorite is the parent who carries their child on their sholders whilst they smoke. Just think of all those chemicals wafting round their little kiddies head.
Tiggs
You could of course still have limited their height and intelect. You will just never know.
When I used to smoke I was also a keen cyclist, a contradiction I know. I often wondered how much easier the hill would have been if I didn't smoke.

they fine us for speeding in our car even if we don't crash or harm anyone. so, why not take the same "preventitive" measure with expecting mothers? fine them if they smoke in case they harm their child.
smoking kills, proven fact - yet we do bugger all to stop it. speeding kills (far fewer people) yet we try agressively to stop it.

Oh well, my 2p then...
1) Mums to be shouldn't smoke when pregnant - smoking is a choice taken by the parent, this choice should be extended to the child, not inflicted.
2) I think we should scrap National Insurance or reduce Income Tax, and then everyone pays for medical assistance on an insurance type basis. (I appreciate 'insurance' is something I shouldn't mention on the scooby boards !) But if you're a fat bast... that weighs 30stone, doesnt exercise, smokes heavily and drinks like a fish - then you should pay more as you're likely to cost more.
If you're a monk that lives on lettuce and water, exercising once a day and never smoked a cigarette in your life, then you should pay very little for medical care etc.
