Dress code ? Tie ? Shave ?

I'm confused

I've been to the office for last few days 'cos it has air/con and is a damn site more comfortable than the study at home

My airconditioned office is nice.

Unfortunatly our engineers have to wear full overalls, refective jacket, boots, shin pads, helmets, goggles or safety specs, gloves, and when required ear defenders.

Just curious about how far dress codes could/ should be stretched at the mo. (Uniformed professions aside).

Does anyone work for a really draconian company that's not being flexible?

I work with loads of artisic types and the code is stretched to the limit - no tights/ stockings, open toed sandles & flip flops, no jakckets. Luckily HR Directer is on hols atm!!

Boys seem to have it worse - anyone managed to ditch their tie?

And does it really matter anyway?

We wear whatever we want whenever we want. Always do. Absolutly no dress code all year.

Sometimes I don't shave for a week.

Mind you, I am in the process of joining the Police Force so that'll all change son.

Poor Mr Gee

I know this is my favourite question - but Why?

Does the suit help you do your job any better? Unlikely in this weather. Does it make you more intelligent? Nope!

I know I have to conform, but people are people - why does it matter what they're wearing...?

Our Helpdesk Manager came in his shorts and polo shirt yesterday.

I'm stuck in short sleeved shirt and tie with visiting customers, although if it's a long term customer I can ditch the tie when it's cooking.

Thank god for climate control. The days of turning up on-site looking like you've just stepped out the shower are long gone!

I've been working on dress codes alot lately with regards to my sales reps. I wanted to find out from customers, what was the purpose/point/relevence of a tie and would they be less likely to buy or be offended in any way if one of my reps turned up without one on.
I wanted the results because personally i don't think you need a tie to be a rep. They already get treated like crap anyway so the tie thing obviously doesn't work.
I think that dressing smart maybe with a corporate polo shirt or the like would probably INCREASE sales as it is far more relaxed. No briefcase, just a note pad, an informal chat, go away, come back propose a solution, ask for the business job done without any fancy sales tricks or patter Every one is happy
Anyway, we called 848 of our customers and guess what 424 said "Good on yer, ties suck," the other 424 said they expected a tie. EXACTLY 50%
Interestingly, when quizzed as to thier reasoning, most of the "Must have a tie" camp said "Well, that's the way it's always been round here" Get promoted often do they?

Tricky one I know. There's this book of 'unwritten rules' somewhere with all this sort of cr@p in it - we should all be asking 'Why?' a lot more!!

We should dress smartly for work - WHY????

I really hate the word 'should'

Getting married soon and everyones fussing about dresses and hats - WHY??? If everyone turned up in bikini's would we be any less married...? And don't say its about respect because then I'll have to ask WHY the way I dress in anyway should reflect how much I respect someone - surely that should be down to actions....

It's amazing how much stuff we do for no other reason than someone thinks we should .

No, especially not when it gets caught in one of the fans

I guess it comes down to presenting a professional image. Mikey's results are very interesting...

I think it's just 'convention'(though less so these days). A hangover from a bygone era. Time was when *everybody* wore suits and ties and *hats*

It all starts in school with school 'uniforms'.

Why women seem to be exempt puzzles me though.

I work outdoors along Rivers, so most of the time i wear scruffy clothes, walking boots or wellies We haven't got a dresscode i dont think

The farmers dont take too well to people turning up in suits and will treat you as a 'townie' with no idea about farming or the countryside (not saying they all will ofcourse).

Today however I'm based in the office so flip-flops and summery skirt are on today

riles me now end this does!

My boss ribbs me for wearing a company polo shirt to work with smart trousers & shoes

But hes the one swaeting like a pig 5 meteres from me as our a/c has packed up again!

Stuck in a time warp this place - I would prefer to sit here in shorts & a co polo short, and I would probably get more work done without the fear of passing put in this heat

In 1991 (hot summer) I worked at a computer reseller. Downstairs was the non-cooled warehouse where I shifted boxes (manual labour), upstairs was the aircon’d open plan sales office. I mentioned coming in in shorts, but was told we in the warehouse weren’t allowed to wear shorts, as customers would occasionally be shown through as part of a sales pitch. Yet jeans, even pretty scrappy ones, were fine.

As the temps hit 30C, I’d had enough of doing sweaty work in long trousers, and came in one day in a smart pair of khaki shorts and clean plain t-shirt. Sure enough, I was summoned to the office, where I was quietly informed that we were not allowed to wear shorts at work, due to uniform policy.

“How long has this rule been around?” I asked. “Is it new?”

No, I was told it was there for as long as anyone could remember.

“Well how come the girls have been wearing shorts and no-one has complained?”

Sort of mumbled, throwaway line of “Because they’re girls”.

“Oh really. And have you ever heard of the Sex Discrimination Act?”

Embarrassed pause, meeting called to an end earlier than expected.

Next day an email went round saying that women were no longer allowed to wear shorts of any kind in the offices. They were furious.

A week later, a few girls started wearing smart shorts again. No-one commented.

The next day, I wore my shorts again.

About 3 months after that, the company went bankrupt. Nothing to do with the above, but a satisfying end to the story nevertheless

Oh yeah, Badger Stuffer

…nice to see you’ve got the patronising in already, sonny jim
