one of my flat mates has been doing it for a good number of years, and some of the positions and move he can do are unbelievable!

he also says that an hour of Yoga is equal/ more than the same duration CV workout IHHO.

its good that you arent expecting to much to quickly as from what i've seen i think the movement and practices need some proper training to do! e.g. he does 10 min plus head stand... can't be good for the neck, but due to the heart having to force blood around the body its like sprinting for 10 min but without the whole rigmorol of it or so he says.

HTH

I think you'll be supprised, he isn't a spring chicken and had some mobility/joint probs which is why he took it up in the first place and he can now do some serious moves and it does make him feel a lot better!

a friend of mine does ashtanga yoga. it is partly a mind thing as well as an exersize. he seems to get a lot out of it. I like the idea of it but at the moment I am far too lazy to give it enough time.

I've got a long list of activities to take up (do more windsurfing, kickboxing, take up yoga etc).
Being sat on my bum all day has made me a lazy fat cow (unemployed) although new job starts next monday so motivation levels should improve

If you have back pain, as long as you are careful not to push too hard, yoga will probably help by loosening and strengthening the bits which hurt.

I've just started doing it in the last couple of weeks. I find it surprisingly strenuous and usually end a class dripping, but I feel fantastic (muscles nice and loose, loads of energy, very relaxed) afterwards.

I also have a bad back and I've been doing Pilates for about 3 months on the advice of my chiropractor. Yoga and Pilates are definitely related, some of the moves are so similar as to be indistinguishable, but Pilates concentrates more on strengthening the core muscles around the belly and lower back. It's made a huge difference to the way my back feels as well - I used to be very "fragile" and could put my back out just like that, now it's much more flexible and I don't have to be paranoid any more.

The only problem is the image... think middle-aged ladies in leotards...

I've been doing some beginners yoga recently and I feel a lot better afterwards. Certainly worth a try. Maybe get some info on the different kinds - there's a lot and some are more strenuous than others. Also, let the instructor know if you have any injuries or problems. A good one should ask anyway.

Be careful that you choose an accredited instructor. There's been some news on this over the last couple of days because Which? brought out a report on yoga instruction.
