Hello

Once you are over 16, I believe you are not legally required to be educated. Your friend should of applied to the sixth form? Not just turned up?

Steve.

yes I am .. He is 17 and his life just went out of the window.

To make matters worse. The teacher told him he could not take his own art work with him. he did take it and had a bit of a verbal argument with the teacher who tried to stop him.....

this boy is 100% not a trouble maker etc... Just wanted to keep his work.

Unfortunately i believe the school is entitled to turn him away then. Getting into college/sixth form is based on points/grades, so yes they can turn him away. He could just go to college though??

Luke

I am the Chair of Governors at a school which has not got a Sixth Form, so I am not too sure of my facts regarding the years 16+

BUT, I would guess that he would have to apply to do A levels or AS levels?? Otherwise the School assumes he has left - got an apprenticeship or college training or even a GAP year.

He should have been made aware of what he needed to do?? Was he expelled for the argument??

Pete... He wasnt expelled because the teacher he spoke to knows him well and even though it got heated . Nothing rude was realy said. They get on well. Just teacher said it was sometype of rule??

As he was going into his second year I would have thought it was automatic.

Sixth form are more selective and i guess if his grades were low, then maybe they didn't want to take the chance on him?? As he's under 18 they have to pay for the exams. Thats the only reason i can think of. My friend got kicked off one of her courses at college as her grades didn't meet the criteria to enter A2.

Luke:

If he is re-taking his GCSE's, I believe you only have one year to do that?

Was he on a two year course?

Steve.

This has just happened to me.

walk in "Cant be here m8, grades were ****"

but the teachers (because im a good kid ) are letting me resit AS levels again.

you lad should be able to do this (may have to chat to teachers and say, he had an off year last year etc) or resit his exams in january.

hope this helps.

Bit late for college......His local college in Swindon hasnt any places. If these facts turn out to be true.... and they treat kids like this..

then someones elses life is also going to be turned upsidedown.

I remember applying each year I wanted to do college - it was never assumed that I would just get in again.

If I failed the year before or grades weren't up to scratch I am sure they would have not allowed me in ............... without doing the last year all over again?

Its heartbreaking and I hope he sorts it out!! We have to turn kids away from our school as its well oversubscribed and parents will do ANYTHING to get their kids in ........... and as for the ones who forget to apply, well, its terrible - especially if its happened due to some family event like death or divorce!!

His exam fees will get paid until he's 19. He shouldn't worry as so many people retake. Just means university one year later.

i was pissed off I didnt get a letter but thats schools for yer.

Im in a class with several other students who should now be in yr 13 like me, but it is Physics chemistry and maths so fail r8s higher than other subjects.

But i knew I failed and got it sorted on the 1st day.

went to guy in charge of timetables and he just said, what u wanna do in yr 12 then?

sorted.

Get yr 12 resat. Im really confident now in my lessons and am doing great because of this due to my large amount of knowledge of the subject.

Its my gap yr gone tho
always time for that when im rich tho

I want to et some facts before I talk to him again.
Until you know the exact situation, it's all speculation. I don't see how anyone on here can give advice until then...

Difficult to understand an attitude like that from the school Luke. Hard to say what he can do without knowing what the regulations are. Sounds almost like one of these stealth jobs been slipped in without telling anyone. At the very least he should have been advised what the score was at the end of the school year, or well before for that matter. I certainly did not have to apply to stay at school after 16. It was assumed that I would be there the next year. I suppose his only course may be to make a fuss with maximum publicity. No good the school saying well sorry we did not mention it but it is done now anyway!

Les, disgusted!

Fair enough. I'm justing thinking you don't know what advice is relevant to the situation, so what's put on here could well be incorrect. Different LEAs might have different rules too.

One other question - are you his guardian?

Surely his parents would have been notified as he is technically a minor still.

Not 100% sure of the facts but.............

My little mate told me he went back to school this week and was told "Your not suppose to be here".. His grades are not as good as he expected. He came and stayed with us a few weeks ago and was so looking forward to going back to school. He was hell bent on going to university to study fine art.

he reccons he has had no letter sent to inform him.

Can they just expect him to turn up at the begining of term and find this out????

he's gutted... I want to et some facts before I talk to him again.

Luke, try contacting your Local Education Authority - normally at the County Council's headquarters - ask them to clarify.

Thumbs up

You might find the door shut on you at some point then if you no legal right to ask about it ie not his parent or guardian.

Admirable though that you're looking into it for the lad
