Is it worth it?.....if you got your TV/Stereo nicked why would you want the old ones back when the insurance company will buy you some new gear.
The old ones may be scratched and damaged as well.
Thirdly you lose nothing by claiming, its not like you get no-claims on contents insurance anyway.
What if they are returned 6 months later AFTER you have bought new stuff through the insurance? What happens then.
Just a question cos we got a pen through the door yesterday as part of a local crime prevention scheme.

paulr - tend to agree, but what if the insurance company have paid out and you've got the replacement kit. Plod then turn up the stolen stuff with your markings on it. Evidence against the p1key$ that stole it?

once the insurance company has paid out doesn't the insurance company then own the goods if they are found ??
we managed to buy back the returned stuff from the insurance company for a fraction of the price the insurance company paid out.

As Doug said,
when the police raid a thieving scum's council flat (that he probably isn't paying rent or council tax for), even if they find a pile of twenty video players with no instructions - they have to prove that they are stolen goods, or the crim can keep 'em.
If they all had different postcodes written on then, then that will set the alarm bells ringing and allow the police to follow things up and get that vital proof to send them to court (where they will be given free tea and biscuits and a slap on the wrist )

The insurance company paid out for the value of the goods and did not replace them. if the goods are found but damaged the insurance company should still pay out for the damage. Hopefully you have a like-for-like policy so damaged goods should be replaced with new.

If it's something irreplacable, then it can help you get it back.
If it's a commodity (VCR, electronics etc) then you'll not be too upset at having to buy a new one, but as mentioned above it can help trace the items back to their proper owners and provide evidence for prosecution.
It's well worth it IMHO.

I'd have thought you would still get the equipment replaced anyway, and if it is found it belongs to the insurance company as was said. Still worth doing it to help catch the crims anyway.

If the insurers have already paid out to you, they own title of the goods once recovered. They then sell the goods in order to reduce the net cost of the claim by recouping some of their outlay to you. If the net cost of all theft claims could be reduced in this way, the premiums that you and I pay would be lower.
Don't leave it to everyone else ... play your part.
With regards what to do when you move; write your postcode AND the moving date each time.

Good point, otherwise the police would claim ownership, sell them and the money could end up buying more speed camera's.
