About three weeks ago, someone managed not only to discover my credit card number, address, and d.o.b but also managed to somehow discover the 3 pin number on the back of the card!
Seeing that I use this card for mainly online purchases It also made me wonder a little just how secure online purchases actually are, encryption or no encryption.
Anyway they used the card to place a £400 bet online with a bookmakers called Stan Miller Gibralter. When I looked at the 2nd page of the statement I was amazed to see the bet had won and whatsmore the £400 bet had been refunded and £1850 had also been placed in the account! I'm rich! (so I thought)
For whatever reasons the conmen had decided to leave the amounts there, could not gain access to them, whatever I don't know.
I immediately cancelled the card and informed the credit card company that I thought some kind of fraud maybe taking place.
The girl laughed, congratulated me on my good fortune (!) and put me on hold to speak to the fraud department. She couldn't get through! She offered to ask them to call me back so I agreed.
Well a weeks gone by and I've finally received a letter from the credit card company asking me to ring them concerning 'activity' on my account. I checked my account this morning and the money is still there....Mmmmmm...!
So what are my chances? Do you think I'll get to keep the cash (I don't but it's been nice dreaming) or can they remove amounts of money from my account without permission etc etc .
Just wondering how this is going to play out.
Interesting eh?

Once they have cancelled the card any credit/debit should be transferred to your new card.
Have you got your new one yet?

I'd just keep shtum and wait to tee how it plays out.

Hi Paulr,

Yeah got the new card and everything and the **prospect of going shopping in New York** nest egg is still there. I've tried to ring the fraud department of the card company about6 times today and each time I've been getting a recorded message telling me that the person I want to speak to is unavailable :sigh:....So sod 'em I'll let them contact me.

Camk.
Nope never had an account with them.

Someone told me (or I read in the paper) the exact same story about 12 months ago - are you for real?!?

Good luck to you if you are - but only spend the money once you know it's yours is my advice!

Do nothing then.
Personally i'd leave it about a year and then if its still there think about spending it.

A similair(ish) thing happenned to me once.I took a bank cheque from the Halifax for 4.5K once, the cheque was cashed at the other end but the Halifax forgot to take the money from my account.
I did nothing.
Two years later an audit showed it up and they wanted the money back.Obviously i had to repay it,but i made about £60 in interest.

Oh it's for real alright. I think I remember reading the same story but I think it was a switch debit card, not a credit card.

To be honest, i think you should give the money to either the credit card company or a charity

Why......... Well if the best would have lost you would have kicked up a right stink and wanted your money back.....

Thats what i would do !

How bizarre!

I say keep the money! Dont give it back to the CC company, they make more than enough money already. And they are not bothered at all about CC fraud in the UK. "Chip and Pin", CC companys new way of reducing fraud in the UK, currently being trialled in Northampton, has been in use in France for over 10 years now.

Shopping on the Net is far safer than not! You are more likely to have your card data copied when you pay in a resturant or shop, than suffer internet cc fraud.

Are you normally a betting person?
Do you know what the bet was placed on?
You dont think it could have been a mate doing you a favour?!

Dont see how you are likely to have the money taken away from you. If you'd have lost the bet, would the bookies have refunded? I think not!

Nice one!
