well last year when TFOTR came out they actually did 2 different 4 disc editions !
1 was called the Special Edition - 4 discs all the extras etc which i bought....£29.99.
then there was another 4 disc edition called the Collectors Edition, iirc ? which was in a fancy box and included 2 plastic looking (ie crap!) bookends !!!! afaik thhe 4 discs were exactly the same content as the Special Edition. this was a rip off £39.99
nope nothing about tom bombadil is in the films.

You should get the FOTR-EE for around £20 (cdwow.com) and TTT-EE for £25. If you look in the "bargain & offers" forum on av-forums.com you can save upto another £2.50 per order (so order seperately).
If you have a multi-region player, get the region 1 as the packaging is slightly better and there were some sound issues with R2 FOTR discs. Also, there's a couple of "easter eggs" hidden away. A preview of TTT (a bit late, huh) on disc 2 and on R1 disc 1 there's a quite funny "Council of Elrond" skit with Sarah Michelle Geller where the ring is used by a hobbit for a Prince Albert (not on R2 for rating reasons). The EE is the version which should have been released as it restores many critical parts of the book back into the film, such as the giving of gifts by Galadriel, and improves it drastically.
The TTT-EE will be a mammoth 43 minutes longer, and again, from the preview I've seen on the 2 disc set, will make for a much improved film.
By the way, the complete Tom Bombadil scene was filmed lasting over 1/2 hour, but was dropped due to pacing. It was thought that it slowed the film way too much and added nothing to the progression of the story. I don't doubt that it will see the light of day in some future money sapping special in the future.
Another reason to get the EE's is the sound and picture quality. With the film spread over 2 discs and all the extras moved off to another 2, there is a vast amount of storage available to allow the highest resolution (10m/s) transfer of the print, and you gain a full DTS surround track. Well worth the extra alone.
Hope this helps.

Seen the DVD for sale at £13.99 last week, and was off to buy it as my DVD player works again now, (thanks, kids......NOT).
On the packaging it seemed to be saying that there was a special extended version available, and this wasn't it.????
So...........is there a special?
Where's it available?
How much will I pay?
Is it worth it, ie: does it have bits not in the film, or is it just full of bits about how they made the film?
Thanks to those in the know who bother to reply:

The Special Extended 4 disc editon of TTT comes out on Nov 18th.
i'm waiting for it as i did last year with TFOTR.
it will be worth it.
loads of extras, plus an extra 30 mins of footage in the film itself.

dont they reckon that the cinema release of return of the king is going to be 3 and half hours and the special edition 4 and a half.

yep they sure do !
supposedly peter jackson wanted the previous ones to be 3½ hours but was told that was to long for people to sit in a cinema !
still all the more money for them to make with a special edition 4 disc dvd release

Anyone know the approx price it'll be then? Sounds as if I did the right thing waiting.
Now, all I have to do is get the extended version of TFOTR..........I only have the video at the mo:
BTW: what comes next? The Hobbit? The Silmarillion? Farmer Giles of Ham? The adventures of Tom Bombadil?
And did the bit in the Old Forest, and being saved by Tom Bombadil, then lost on the Barrow Downs, make it into the extended DVD of TFOTR??

Shame: When I first read the book, many years ago, I thought the journey under the Hay, and through the Old Forest was one of the most atmospheric bits in the book.
Still, you can't have it all, can you?

I have been strongly resisting purchasing any of the DVD's up to the other day, but my very strong desrire to watch TTT again and not waiting probably 12 months before it comes on Sky, forced me to buy the 2 disc DVD edition. Watched it last night - as I have a pretty good sound system at home, the whole house was shaking during the battle of Helms Deep! - Superb!
My view was that as each film seemed to be getting more than one DVD release, there may be something worth waiting for in future, ie after the third film is released a special 3 film, collectors box set. And that would be the thing I would get.
As I said I couldn't wait so will buy the DVD's that are out now (will probably get Fellowship too) and will probably get the 3 film set when that is out (probably in time for Xmas 2004).
There is an element of commercialism here, unfortunately, on the part of the DVD distributors/makers, but at least it is not as bad as George Lucas, yet!
Yes there are bits taken out of the books, but I believe it has enhanced the films - in Fellowship the early parts are much more like a modern chase film as opposed to - IMO the slightly overlong and meandering part of the book.
This is not meant as a serious criticism, more a stamp of approval of the film. Actually I am frothing at the mouth at the thought of the next film, I think it will blow everything else away.
Do you fear to tread "The Paths of the Dead?"
That was my favourite bit and I feel certain that PJ will do it justice.
CANT WAIT!!!

Yeah, I got duped on the FOTR by not realising about the EE, and ended up buying both. For TTT I bought a dodgy disc from Malaysia for £8 in January to put me on 'til next month. Funny thing is, the dodgy disc, although having no extras (so what) it has better (DTS) sound than the official (2 disc) relase (DD).
I in no way condone piracy, and can only feebly half justify my actions by confirming that I paid 3x to see it at the flix, and have already ordered the EE set. You need a disclaimer like this on AV-Forums, and you still get flamed.

For those who want to see the Elrond skit :-
Easter Eggs - On "Region 1-Disc 1", head for the Scene Selection menu, navigate to the final page, and highlight the "Council of Elrond" scene listing. Then press the "down" directional button to reveal a ring. Hit enter and you'll see the parody of the Council scene made by MTV for their Movie Awards, and starring Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar in amongst footage from the original film. Peter Jackson provides a quick introduction.
On "All Regions-Disc 2", head for the Scene Selection menu and navigate to the page where the listing for chapter 48 (the "official fan club credits") is. Press the "down" directional key and you'll reveal a little silhouette of two towers. Press enter for the 3 and a half minute preview of The Two Towers that was originally included at the end of screenings of the first film. A short introduction from Peter Jackson is also included.

OK, another question.
Before the release of TTT, I saw a poster of the 9 in the ringbearer's party going down the River towards the two statues which had their arms outstretched in a forbidding gesture. Never seen it since, and wish I'd bought it.
Anyone know where it could be had?

Got a right telling off from one of the moderators and then a snotty e-mail - I nearly pissed myself!
The day I take an IT Geek seriously is the day I'll happily jump off the nearest cliff...
Anyway, LOTR - pure genius! Both Tolkien (undoubtedly) and Jackson are legends IMO.
Hired TTT from Blockbuster the other day and spent most of last night watching FOTR on my new laptop - couldn't think of a better film to test the crispness of the monitor.

They are a bit snooty on there. Ask them anything and you get a load of t0553rs saying "Do a search, do a search", they love sniding at each others equipment and go proper Rita Hayworth if you advocate piracy. I recommend a group buy on chill pills for them.
Not a bad place to gain knowlege though.
