Bear with me, I get to the point eventually.

My normal place of work requires me be in work at 7.30am, then finishing at 4pm to make the 8 hr day. (1/2 hr lunch) Monday to Friday.

A pretty normal day !

Now, the boss decides to take on some work that requires me to leave home at 5am on the first day and travel 2 1/2 hrs to site, having to stay in a hotel for the rest of the week and getting up at 5.45am each morning to enable me to catch a tube /train to get to the work site. finishing around 4.30 each day and travelling on the tube approx 3/4 hr back to the hotel.

Now the crux of the problem !

The boss pays the train fare, the hotel fee and gives me £5 for an evening meal each night !
The normal way I'm paid is by the hour and the boss pays me the travel time on the first and last day of the week (i.e from home to the site on the first, and from the site to home on the last)
He does not pay me travel to/from the site/hotel.
My hourly rate does not change when working away from my normal place of work!

Your thoughts please, as I am going to "have a word" on Monday.

A week ago I posted a similar thread on another forum expecting to be "re-imbursed" very little, but since actually being away I think he's just taking the **** !

Pissed off and broke
Andy

edit to add: thinking on the lines of "what my contract says"
I think the line 7 years ago went.... "gis a job"... and I got it.
so don't mention contracts to me, or I might spit the dummy out.

I would speak to him and suggest something fairly reasonable like he gives you an extra hour a day for the inconvenience. he should be able to pass this cost on to the client in any case. if you are non-confrontational about it you may well get a smpathetic response. what annoys me is when i get people phoning me in a rage because they haven't got something that they feel they are "entitled" to. Then i get p*ssed off and don't feel like helping 'cos nobody needs to get abuse 10 hours a day.

Taking the ****.

I work out from home to work place and back less travelling time.

Say .5 hours each way = 1 hour per day for travel.

Away from home hotel to work to hotel less normal travelling time 1 hour = hours for day.

Simple as that.

All the best

In my normal environment it costs me nothing to travel to work as I live 30 seconds walk away.

Keep the thoughts coming, useful ammo on Monday.

I don't think it's that much of a **** take. He gets paid the major travel time at the beginning and the end of the week, and the remaining 8 journeys are taking 3/4 of an hour each. assuming that he doesn't live five minutes away from the normal place of work, he is probably only ending up 8 x 15 minute out of pocket, ie two hours.

it's all swings and roundabouts...

Now we see the reason I'm a little..

I asked the boss for some money while I was away (some of you will know my UK00 is bleeding me dry at the moment)as I have very little spare cash, he gave me £40 quid and called it an emergency fund
come friday and the boss turns up and asks me for the receipts for the week and the £40... he looked perplexed when I held out my hand with about 0.70 pence and said that's all that's left (admittedly I spent £14 of that on batteries for me digi cam) the rest went on food during the day and strongbow in the evening!
wait a mo... another £8 of that was on train fares he "conveniently" forgot to pay for!
....and £5 that a DLR ticket machine ate, without giving me a ticket or any change.

LOL so that makes £13 pound I actually managed to spend this week on day food and scrumpy jack at night !
I don't think that's exactlt extravagent.... do you ??

Just got home from work and feel the exact same way. I work for a 'Family' Company who portray this across to the customers.
But they are nothing more than Pi$$ takers !!!

I HATE MY JOB AND NEED TO GET OUT.

Not that you lot really care, but typing this makes me feel a little bit better !!!

I work away a lot of the time. My company ( one of Britains biggest)

Pays me no extra for being away
Gives me £5 night incidental expenses
Pays my evening meal up to £20 or £25 in London
Pays my B&B
All expenses are paid for with Comp credit card so receipts must be produced at all times.

i think £5 for an evening meal is a little bit tight. is he expecting you to have pie and chips every night? if he is a reasonable person and you approach the matter in the right way, i think you should be able to get a few extra hours. if he's unreasonable then there isn't really a lot you can do unfortunately. other than tell him to stick it.

he should be able to pass this cost on to the client in any case
he already will have done that - he's laughing all the way to the bank - I assume you are in London, where does a fiver go now ?, let alone in London.

You should be looking at ALL travelling time/fares paid, and at least £30 a night for your subsistence. That will cover your food for the day, a couple of sherbets and a tenner for your trouble.

Thats what we pay our pipe fitters and sparks in London anyway.

ta,

yeah but we don't know what Fuzz does for this tight b*stard. good sparkies are worth their weight in something quite valuable, so it pays to look after them. if Fuzz is in a sector that is massively oversubscribed with people seeking employment, it may not be so easy to demand this and that. although i agree with the principle.

Fuzz,

I have just come from working for a small company with no contracts in place and lots of mutual trust etc etc. My advice? Get everything in writing, trust no-one and look out for number one. You will get royally screwed sooner or later.

Definitely taking the p1ss.

£5 a night for a meal? Kin 'ell what can that get you?

You should be on at least an extra £50 per day that you're expected to be away from home.

He's probably laughing at you behind your back, calling you a mug.

That last bit was simply to wind you up so you have words

Exclamation

the thing is that there are two possible scenarios:

1)boss is a mean b*st*rd, business is highly profitable and he is having a great giraffe becoming a millionaire and screwing his workers in the process

2)business is marginally profitable at best, having to keep costs down to absolute minimum to survive in highly competitive sector. everybody wants to be paid more for doing the same job, sooner or later it's gonna go **** up.

Just for an insite to what I make and do.

It is specialised and I am versatile in my role/s in the company.
I seem to be Welder, steel erector, mechanic, electrician, machinist, and tea boy

Sorry, Chip.

The 'where are you based' was aimed at Fuzz!!

If he's based down here and on that money then he's being taken for a big ride.
