Hifi speakers.. help
#1
![Question](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Does anyone know anything about Acoustic speakers? (the make is Acoustic btw)
A new lad at work has offered me some, basically they are floor standers, (tall slim sort), they have 2 bass drivers and one tweeter (tweeter at top), in black.
The model number is AV 80 II, anyone know what they are like?
Done a search on the web and it comes up with Acoustic Energy, and Acoustic Research, can't find the specific model on the net and don't know whether they are Energy or research, anone have/know of them?
I have B&W book shelf speakers at the mo, and I want some floor standers like this, but some advice would be helpful, thanks

/refers to epic collection of old hifi mags
as far as i can determine, Acoustic Energy have not made a model called AE 80 in the last 10 years or so. Anything by Acoustic Energy is likely to be a decent enough speaker, but unless it's an AE1 or an AE2 (which it isn't) they will only be worth a oner or so second hand. AFAIK Acoustic Research only make high end valve amplifiers. Sounds to me like they are some dodgy taiwanese efforts cobbled together by an opium eater in a brief spell of lucidity between murdering his 100 year old mother and falling back into a permenant state of torpor.

AR did make good speakers.... bit like JBL ..punchy and good for rock etc but with better treble than the JBL's. AE make great speakers.
For that money you should look at "Richer sounds"

Luke - was that the same AR as the valve amp people? i seem to vaguely remember some canadian speaker co. called acoustic something or other...
I has some old mission 733s for years. Fantastic speaker IMO. they are still going strong; i gave them to a friend. eventually replaced them with some cyrus CL70s.

Thanks people.
Well his starting price is £50 for the pair (which I thought was cheap).. think I can get them a little bit cheaper.
My B&W's are the yellow kevlar cone'd DM 600 S3's (small bookshelf speakers). I wanted the next bigger ones up from these really, but the speakers the guy at work is selling seemed cheap.

With speakers, even more so than any other hi-fi component, you need to listen to them before you even think about buying. Never mind whether they're well reviewed or not - I've auditioned a lot of expensive, 5-star models and hated them. At any price point, there will be models you like and models you don't.

tbh i think yourt b&w's are probably better speakers than these acoustic shmoostic efforts that your chappie is trying to offload. the first thing i thought of was "white van scam" but i didn't realise that they had branched out into floor standing units.
alcazar - hadn't heard that the CL70s were discontinued, but maybe they are. i love 'em, even the triffid stands. at the time i also demo'ed some PMCs, some Linn speakers and some ProAcs and I preferred the Cyrus even though they were by far the cheapest. I actually went in with the intention of buying the PMCs but the bass was like chucking rice pudding at the wall. Nothing else had that proper kick to a kick drum. crisp and fast bass - that's what rocks my world.![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

James, have a good punt about, there are plenty of good named secondhand "separates" about.
B&W, moitor Audio, AR, Bose, Mission, Castle, Celestion, to name a few.
I've had my AR18's since 1984, they sound as good today, as they ever did (Cost me £99 with 20ft of monster cable) which in those days, wasa a lot of paper rounds, i can tell you!!
(The walnut colour finish and brown cloth look a bit dated now, with all the glass and chrome about these days) but, hey, speakers are for listening to, not looking at.
Take your time, and something good will turn up.

Luke, you obviously didnt go to top nightclubs in the 80's!!!
or discoteques as they were known.
these were the ONLY speakers you would see.
i wonder why??????
BB![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
PS I'm talking about the 901's and the likes, not the cr4ppy lifestyle ****!!!

Bose is more PA type gear than hif though, wouldn't you say, BB?
couple of times i went to this after club party at this guy's flat in glasgow (apparently irvine welsh was there but nobody knew who he was in those days) and this guy had this bose set up in his flat
it was one of the best "domestic" (using the term loosely) setups I've ever heard for dance music. how the police were never called when it was still rolling at 10 am the next day i dunno. not exactly hifi though

True PC, but also depends on where you live and what you want.
if you are a party animal and have lots of barbeques (or just a 40ft lounge, and like dance music) then these type of speakers rock.
If you are more of a mantovani, james last, pipe & slippers type, then a pair of quad electrostatics will do the business...
Each to there own, i suppose, as with so many things.
Personally i like bookshelf size speakers, on spiked stands.
with good cable and connectors.

yeah i like meridian gear.
too pricey for me though.
i got a Naim integrated amp, rega TT, with Arcam CD at the mo.
nothing fantastic, just functional.
stuck the surround sound in a box in the loft (too many speakers)
would seriously get back into hifi again if i come into some dosh.
- what a great hobby?
Do you rememeber the goldring record decks had one when i was 15, absolutely loved it, with the old audio-technical cleaning fluid for the Shure stylus, and the anti-static spray etc......
Hours spend whiling away thumbing sleeve notes and listening to dark side of the moon!!!!
Now i'm boring you all
Time for bed, deffo!!

PC, can prob get a good mate to sort you out.
he prob wont charge you if its a little job.
(and i say its a favour or something)
mail me the details, as far as you can and i'll run it by him.
he's only a young fella so a couple of pints should do the trick.
