Hey dont knock octavia RS. Mates got one and for 15 k on the road its a hell off a car. Pity its not 4 wheel drive and its good for 140 mph (on private test track somewhere between Telford and M6)its just a pity about that badge

A remapped Octavia 1.8 petrol turbo can give upto 220bhp without other major mods- that being the case I'd expect a run between a 4X4 and an Impreza to be pretty close. Don't underestimate it 'cos it's a Skoda- leave that to drivers of other marques.

Just came across this thread, I drive one of these. Great car and good value for money. Mine has been remapped for 95ron fuel by jabbasport and is running 227bhp, with sul add on some more bhp. on the autobahn in germany have seen >150mph before having to slow down for a mondeo but it was still pulling till that point.
Skoda are far better now that they are part of the vw empire, and depreciation on the RS over the 2 1/2 years I have owned mine is about 3-4k, so its still worth between 11-12k because current demand is outstripping supply and there is still a 3 month waiting list as each RS is handbuilt to order in a separate factory to the mainstream skoda cars.

I used to work for a Seat dealer (under the same VW wing) and can agree on the build quality and engineering on the latest breed of Skoda.
My post wasnt to undermine the quality of Skoda as i know they are very well engineered but just to say that why does it always seem to happen that when you come head to head with a pretty rapid car, i always seem NOT to be in my scooby
I would have enjoyed a lil rumble with one of these (only up to 60mph of course)
Maybe next time i wont be in a Megane

Its better built than a scoob
More reliable
holds its value better
pleases plod more
Doesnt have the scoob image
Once the tuning people get realy hold of this range then look out scoobs

Tuning people already have got a hold of it. have a look here if i had stayed in the UK then I would have probably got a an RS and had it modded. I've seen TaviaRS's car and it is very nice indeed.

I'm another convert from Impreza Turbo to Octavia Turbo (4x4) - there are more and more people doing the same.
Re The Head to Head:
- From 30 to (say) 90mph there really is NOTHING in it been a classic 215bhp (ie 225ish) Impreza and the Octavia (with 220)
AM I SERIOUS???!!!
Well I thought the first Classic I had a fun sprint with wasn't trying, then I realised he was. Then the second and third Impreza was exactly the same - nothing in it.
The difference is that the Impreza is faster from a standing start (about a second quicker to 60 - 5.5 v 6.5), but in the mid-range, the classic is noisier and more rapid feeling, but the Octavia is totally deceptive.
As mentioned above, don't knock them - they are a really terrific value alternative and the tuning potential (seriously) outstrips the Impreza.
I am not mad, deluded or full or anything other than total surprise that the Octavia is as good as it is. They're equally as good as my Imprezas overall !

Come on! I've just been here http://www.skoda.co.uk/#
Have you seen the weight of these things! they make a bugeye look like a feather weight. A classic would pi8s all over one.

I've looked very carefully into this and seen a few in action at the Nurburgring and while I know the classic looks faster on paper there is very little in it in the "real world" (BTW I hate that phrase even though I just used it)
Be interesting to see a shoot out between a jabba'd 'tavia and a standard classic.

Took one of these out when they were relatively unknown compared to now, just before I bought my scoob 20 odd months ago. I was seriously impressed with the Octavia, I wanted a scoob and nothing was going to change my mind on that but the Octavia is certainly on my list of cars to have after the scoob.
Anyone such as Misty who comes on here and says u got to be kidding should go down their dealers and take one out and then come back and comment. In standard trim they are quick so modded up they can quite easily come close to/match a scoob.

4x4 i noticed your comment about the mid range acceleration.
215 scoob 220 rs
scoob is standard as that but noticed you needed to remap the rs to get 220bhp so technically that wouldnt be fair, but i would back the scoob anyday of the week.
you remap any scoob and it will walk even more over the rs as they avearge 30bhp and about the same tourque without the exhaust

FFS what are you lot like, no one here is saying the standard Tavia is quicker than a scoob, just a few of us saying that its a quick car and with the modifications available for it its possible to bring it up to a scoobs performance figures Its a very good car all round.
Typical of people on here slagging something off or denying the capabilities of something when they have never even tried it Only when you have driven one are you qualified to say whether its any good or not!

sorry I was comparing like power for like- ie standard classic V jabba'd 'tavia. I know that a classic with a remap (like mine with its scoobECU) is faster than a remapped 'tavia- I've driven both now.
I think the point is that the Octavia is a damn good car and will give any reasonably quick car a run for its money.

Leics Police have a few too.
I can not afford an Impreza WRX on my company lease - I can afford a vRS Octavia Look forward to very early next year when I'll have an excuse to test drive one

Traffic cops on bbc1 a t5 was pursuing an octavia rs and it left him behind. The voice over tried to mock the skoda but the footage spoke for itself!!!!!

With respect, John's RS at the 'ring was having a few problems so they're not all sweet running. He is trying to get a few more horses from his and is now experiencing overheating and boost cuts. I saw him again at the next 'ring trip and he was still having problems so perhaps they weren't just teething troubles?
I'd say from a passenger perspective that they are quite good but a slightly modded Impreza would have the 'legs' on a more modded Skoda IMHO. I'd certainly consider one if it weren't for my wifes prejudices but at this point I don't think that you can get more than 220BHP from the 1.8l reliably.

Would be interested to know if John's (assume we're talking TaviaRS here?) problems would also be found on other cars using the 1.8T powerplant, or if it's something specific to the skoda version.
Of course, one could possibly just drop in the engine from an Audi S3 and mod that a bit

Not sure about the 1.8L issues in other cars Markus, but I think it a lttle ironic that he's(TaviaRS) always banging on about how reliable they are when his clearly isn't!
F
PS sorry John but I have to use your car as an example of the other side of the coin, as a lot of people are getting carried away with Skoda euphoria!

Jons car has done nearly 130,000 miles in circa 20 months.
The overheating on Ring trip 1, was caused by a dodgy thermostat being unable to cope once our FMIC had been fitted.
The problems on Ring trip 2, were down to a dead clutch.
Understandable problems on any car that has had the battering Jons has taken, and obviously the Ring has a tendancy to highlite any mechanical issues at the time.
