Good Old O2....

So I bought a phone of them 12 months ago on contract, now if I want to upgrade my phone I have to pay £200 for the one I want, but then I could cancel my contract and walk into the shop and get it free on contract.... So where is the loyalty to their existing customers?

Just leave them and go with Voda or Orange. Unless you dont mind losing your number then you can cancel with 02 and re-connect.
This is the same with most of them these days unless you spend quite a bit per month i.e. over £50. I called Vodafone to cancel and they didnt try to stop me in any way, but I only spend £30 per month.
Out of the 3 I liked Orange but they were so slow with bringing out new handsets and had that damn logo on them all. Tried Voda and no complaints there either.

Forgot to say - just moved and in my new house 02 reception is non existent - 1 bar if I am lucky and happy to be next to a window. Orange and Voda seem to work fine. Lucky my work oncall phone is on Voda then (or not maybe ).
