Is this a minimum charge? Aked them to come and sort out a problem with a wall socket where the wires had got pulled out. The guy was in the house for 3 mins and today I get a bill for £50 - they didnt advise there was a min charge of £50 and just said that we'd get a bill!

Should I complain?

You could do - but you'd be better of asking for a quote before any work is carried out next time

If you haven't asked what it would cost what grounds have you got to complain ?

If it had been a plumber or a sparkie doing the small amount of work it would cost about the same, if not more.

Wink

Good job you didn't get one of our engineers out - that would have been £80 or more

Thats not bad. As I worked out the other day, BT make a profit of around £62 a second, so BT earned over £11,000 while that engineer was in your house. Makes £50 seem cheap, don't it?

Just been informed by a reliable source......

Bt will maintain up to the first socket in the house, after that you will be charged.

HOWEVER......

When you notified BT of the fault, you should have been told that there would be a charge AND the engineer should have told you too that it was a chargable job.
So, yes do complain, BUT make sure you have the correct facts as they WILL do checks to ensure you are correct.

Godd luck....
Joan.

On the other hand, we wanted a second phone line put in, which carried a flat fee of something like £50. The technician turned up expeting that we would have 2 or 3 lines already laid in to the main box in the house and it would be 30 mins at the most to fit a new box and test it. As it turned out there was only 1 line and the nearest place to pick up another was at the bottom of the street 100 yards away. It took them a couple of days to do it but they dug up the road and ran the cable up to the house, involving a digger and 3 or 4 guys doing 2 or 3 days work. Still cost £50.

That's the exception rather than the rule though...

Cool

Don't know how much it cost them to install fibre into my old office after their 3 pair copper ISDN 30 continuously failed

All I know is that my company did not pay a penny and infact received compensation to the tune of 5 figures +

I don't let BT near my internal sockets, much easier to wire up yourself!

Well I had a fault with the 1571 answer phone service.

BT said an engineer was definitely required - and fair play, they turned up early. However, it turns out that the problem was actually at the exchange and it was software related.

So the engineer rang the exhange to figure out the problem. The exhange recommended the 1571 disabled then re-enabled. The engineer left and after 30-odd minutes the exchange rang me and said it's all fixed. Problem solved.

The engineer even rang to check everything was OK.

The service (suprisingly!) was very good - although the bill for £125 did shock me a bit!

£50 sounds fine....do you live next door to BT? assume prob not so someone has to get in his car and travel to you. he also has to allow for a longer appointment in case its a big job.

how much do you want to pay? £5....£10?

Hello

That's what I would of thought as well. It must be in their Terms and Conditions about supplying a working line that I rent from them?

"sort out a problem with a wall socket where the wires had got pulled out."

if you rent something then brake it why is it free to fix it?
