My prediction for the year 2040 is.....

...you'll still be banging on about winning the Rugby World Cup in 2003, because 37 years after winning the footie world cup, you lot still can't mention the phrase "world champions" without mentioning 1966 What other big sporting nation in the WORLD boasts about winning something 37 years ago!? Pretty pathetic IMHO....not a very good thing to boast about compared to records of Oz/SA/NZ/France etc.
Colin McRae - **SCOTTISH** team (there's 2 of them in car!) World champion more recently

Personally i think the Scots footie team should take up rugby. I mean, when was the last time the Scots rugby team kept the opposition to 6? ;-)
1st Northern hemisphere team to win the world cup. Says it all really.
Scotland, where were you?

What was the last team sport that Scotland won a World Championship then?
WRC 1995 Colin McRae and Derek Ringer. What were they driving?
some people have very short memories

Well at least we have something to boast about!!
Christ even the Welsh have managed to have a more recent World Champion than Scotland (Phil Mills).
Word of advice Imlach - I'd keep quiet, your arguement isn't really stacking up!!

Chris L & others....the argument wasn't really about what Scotland has or has not won, but more to do with England continually bleating on about their last world champions of 1966!!
Scotland are a minority nation when it comes to sport really....well proven...but we knew that before. Nothing to prove us Scots!
Where England are different is that they put themselves up there with the best, but for all their talk, they should really be winning a lot more often than once every 37 years if we listen to all their "talk".
Their failings under Woodward have taken the best part of a decade to iron out if today is deemed as successful. I seem to remember Woodward bringing his men to Murrayfield for the "formality" of getting the Grand Slam....and they left empty handed. Fair play to those in the RFU for keeping their faith in him. He got there in the end after a long learning process it would seem.

Do I need more evidence of this obsession over 1966 - count how many times it is mentioned in this article.
As I said before, is victory once every 37 years REALLY something to refer to? I see it more as an indication of failure in teams (both footie and rugby) that regards themselves amonst the world's elite in their respective fields.......

Dazza01 - I think you'll find that Scotland actually qualified for a few of the football World Cups you mention that England never even got to go to
Scotland have been there in 74,78,82,86,90,98 - that's 5 consecutive world cups in a row from 74 to 90!! England did NOT perform that feat 6 out of the last 8 world cups, Scotland have been there!
England were NOT there in 74,78, or 94!! England have only been to 5 out of the last 8 world cups.
So, since 1974, Scotland has a BETTER record of qualifying for the World Cup FInals - stick that up ya!
So take off your rose tinted specs Dazza01!

The population of the United Kingdom on Census Day 2002 was 58,789,194.
The populations of individual countries were:
England 49,138,831 (83.6 per cent of the total population)
Scotland 5,062,011 (8.6 per cent)
So, lets see now, England has a population 10 times the size of Scotland.
And they always seem get a kick out of being better than Scotland.
Well with over 80 percent of the population to choose their sports 'heroes' from I’m glad it makes them feel ‘superior’ to be better than us lot and I wont even mention w Wales or NI

Who remembers this? Think it was Rod Stewart:
We're on the march we're Allys army.
We're goin to the Atgentine.
And we'll really shake 'em up,
When we win the World Cup,
Coz Scotland is the greatest football team.
Apart from:
Holland.
Peru.
And the mighty Iranians!
When Scotish sport actually does something, please let me know!
ROFLMAO
Isn't it nice being English today, and reading the papers?
