Question

I now have a Panasonic DVD-r Recorder, not used it yet - looking for some blank discs on the net.

I have a question, some discs will ONLY write at 4x - now, this is confusing because what if I am recording a film off the TV - surely it can ONLY record at 1x? So the discs won't work?

Or am I missing something REALLY simple??

HELP!!

Pete

4x discs are useful in PC based DVD recorders where one can record at more than 1 times speed.

Also, does your DVD recorder have a hard drive? I guess if you recorded something off the TV onto the hard drive, then at a later point, recorded it to DVD-RW, it could do it at 4x.

Beware - don't buy cheap DVD-Rs. The coating is supposedly easily corroded by air etc over time (ie, in terms of years).

PS - to answer your original post now I've reread it, can't see why a 4x disc could not be written to at 1x speed!!!

Think you'd be ok.....

imlach - thats what I would have thought, but if you look here:-

http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk/acatalog/DVDR.html - sorry, cant do clicky!

And scroll down to where it says:-

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This disc will only burn at 4x speed in 4x speed capable drive As with all 4x discs, lastest firmware is recommended.
Customers using in older 1x and 2x writers are advised to check for latest firmware before use. Will wite at 4x in 4x writers, 2x in 2x writers and 1x in 1x writers.

------------------------------------------------------------------

This, to me, indicates that it will NOT burn at 1x?!

I MUST be missing something, somewhere, as why can't it allow a recording at 1x

Confused? You're dead right I am!

Pete
A full disc will take approx. 15min to burn at 4x speed.

Ah, but only if I have the latest firware - I suppose I have as its only 3 weeks old!

Thanks all!

Are 4X DATASAFE RITEK G04 DVD-R discs any good? - Dixons wants £33 for 10 Packard Bell Discs, are they better quality or is it just Dixons rip-off prices again?

No, you don't need any latest firmware! You will be fine.

As I said before, I've bought some unbranded DVD-Rs before, and while they worked ok in the device they were recorded on, they didn't work in other devices. While Verbatim ones work in everything I can find....so I use them now.

So, before buying a spindle of 25 or 50, either go for branded, or try 1 first.

This disc will only burn at 4x speed in 4x speed capable drive...
That's just so people don't think the discs will burn at 4x if used in an older machine only capable of burning at 2x. A little like saying you can only drive at 150mph where laws permit. Doesn't mean you cant drive slower.

This is correct. Supposedly, some older 2.4x DVD+R drives cannot correctly work with the new dye formations of the latest 4x discs (e.g. Ricoh) without a firmware upgrade (if it is available). Best way is to try it and see. To date, I have found no problems.

Also, Ritek are one of the biggest CDR/W DVDR/W manufacturers in to world. They make discs for TDK, Verbatim, Memorex, Traxdata and many others (too many to list - very few 'brands' actually make their own discs). There branded product is generally of very good quality.
