Question

Just wondering presume it's a non event but i'm currently going round all my local roads with a tape measure seeing if my car on it's way from Japan might have any issues. Yes technically it's been lowered 20mm so it's not standard & yes i am clutching at straws but there must be some guideline at least as to how harsh they're allowed to be?

I believe a 100mm is the max height.

some speedhumps have had to be removed by incompetent contractors/councils due to being too high or steep. don't know what the figures are though.

To give you a rough guide I set the coilovers on my M3 to give just enough height to get over the bump in the lane at my previous house.... the lowest point on my car is just behind the front wheels and is 9cm above ground level. It gets over 99% of speed bumps without scraping if I am careful to go over slow enough such that the front struts don't compress!

Doing a reccie of all the local speed bumps is a good idea! How high off the ground will the car be?

The thing is, lots of private car parks just dump a load of tarmac in a lump to make a speed bump.

Graunched the bottom of the Cerb on a speed bump in my local golf club
Fortunately I've joined another one now (not because of that reason)

lol!

There is a speed bump I know of that I have to put one wheel up on the kerb, using the speed bump as a ramp, in order to get over!

We had big argument with local council about height of speed bumps, they sent people round to watch our cars drive over them and said it was because our cars were lowered, every day run of the mill cars were fine as long as you slowed down! Lots of people wrote to local paper, even owners of cars which were standard, complaining of height of speed bumps. Council refused to accept they were too high.

After we moved house we discovered that Mercedes actually challenged the council over the height and eventually they realised that they had put them in upside down!!

REDCAR & CLEVELAND BOROUGH COUNCIL for the locals that know!!

oooh good info so far. Dont know 100% what the actual clearance is for the car but doing a rough estimate from pictures (compared to wheel size) i have around 3" from the front splitter/spoiler to the wheels hitting such a nast hump which is ~13" so it's a bit tight for my liking & in addition there;'s sills down the side of vcar which may make even rear wheels a bit close
Theory/hope is that i'm told it will rise slightly when you turn wheel to full lock which does seem to have some logic to it but still wana try & plan a risk free route to/from my house to save on paintwork

There was some suggestion that the council usually pay compensation for cars damaged on potholes that have been reported to them.

It was proposed that if you were to report speed humps as "inverted potholes" then the council might pay out. I don't believe this has ever been tested in the real world but it is true that they are nothing but an inverted pothole and so it might be possible to make this stick in some places.

Worth a try, you've nothing to lose but the cost of a phone call.

We had speed humps introduced this year in our area. After 3 months of complaining by local residents (not the boy racers) 20% were removed as they where in unsuitable places. And most of the others had to be reduced in height as they were to high. Also 2 mini roundabouts had to be re-positioned in the road as you couldn't drive around them, the angle was too tight.
Apprently all the extra worked wasn't paid for as it was the contractors that had made the mistakes.
