If it's fresh carrots, sprouts, cauliflower etc, bung them in a pressure cooker with a couple of cupfuls of water and check them after about 10 minutes - if they are too crunchy for your taste, try doing them a little longer (add more water). Or just get a can of peas'n'carrots, broad beans, butter beans or whatever you plan to use and heat them up in a saucepan.

Peel potatoes, cut into four place in pan of boiling water, and boil for 15 mins. Same method for carrots/turnip. Frozen peas/sweetcorn, put in pyrex dish and microwave for 5 mins. When spuds are done add butter and mash. Carrots/turnip add butter pepper and mash/chop. Serve on plate with peas/sweetcorn, chicken gravy spuds carrots. Voila!!

Glad it went ok.

Do doing roast potatoes try this:

boil for 15 minutes or 50% cooked (check with a knife, should slide in easily, as it were )
then put in a roasting tin with sun flower oil and sprinkle Bisto gravy granules over them, then by hand, mix up the pototoes to make sure they are covered in the granules (not to the point you can't see the potatoe anymore).
Then roast until brown (30-45 mins).

Roast? Isn't that what locals are for? Nice roast by the fire, with a pint of beer?

Get some Findus ready to microwave roasts - put them at the back of the freezer and when the mrs goes out next time ask her to give you a call 5 mins before she gets back!
