No way is their behaviour acceptable in Britain. Does anyone think its fine to leave a child on their own in a car when its so young? I can't believe they are trying to squirm their way out of trouble by saying this is normal behaviour in Europe
[img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
Just cos one child is ill doesn't mean to say you abandon the other child even if it is for a few minutes. Doesn't take 30 seconds to smash a car window and remove a child from a car so they were ******* ignorant and stupid to think it was fine to leave the child alone

I quite agree. You have to ask, if you think the couple are telling the truth when they say they were only gone 'for a minute', why BOTH parents had to rush to the toilet with their kid????? I mean, I'm not a father for 6 months yet but I get the feeling that it will only take one of us to do that ....
If I was the Yanks I'd just kick them out of the country...

Sounds like they are Jews... Maybe Orthadox. Well if you think thats bad...Go to North London where they are from and see if you can see one of their children with a safety belt on in a car. They dont care .

At the risk of being flamed, the story doesn't say;
1. How long they were gone for
2. Whether their car was within their sight all the time
3. Whether the six month old was sound asleep
4. What the reason was for them both having to go at once
5. Whether the car park was supervised.
Without that information, i don't think it's fair to pass instant judgement. Many, many people *do* leave kids in cars, albeit unwillingly, but sometimes it is just about unavoidable.

Telboy sorry its unexcusable and the fact they are saying its perfectly acceptable in UK/Europe shows what a lieing couple of tossers they are.
I very much doubt they could see the car from where they were especially if they were both taking the other kids to the loo. Secondly they would surely have gone straight back to the car if they had seen police taking an interest in their car!
Sounds to me they were just too damn lazy to get the baby out the car and carry/push it about![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Luke I would hazard a guess you arn't too far off the mark there.

B20, i hear where you're coming from, but to say there are NO circumstances under which this can ever be excused is somewhat naive, in my humble opinion.
I feel *much* more strongly about kids without seatbelts...

Well sorry mate but there are absolutely no circumstances I would leave my 6 year old son in the car alone where he would be out of sight. Literally the only time he is the car on his own is at a petrol station and even then I lock the doors.
To do that to a 6 month old baby is just unnacceptable in any circumstances, I really can't understand how you think it could be acceptable. You just don't do it.

many times You will see babies in cars at supermarkets. Just before Christmas at Southgate i reported a baby and child in a car at tescos. The Security put aout about 5 calls to the owner of the car/parents etc.. By this time a small crowd had gathered.
Did that woman get some stick !!!!!! when she returned.

Seems a bit "fishy" to me. Can't understand why both of them had to take the other child to the toilet. Very difficult to justify I think.
Inexcusable to leave a baby unattended like that.

Hello
Mmmm .... if my daughter (7 months) is sound asleep then my wife and I will leave her for 5 minutes in the car.
I wonder if there are other circumstances not mentioned in the story: Like it was extremely hot, or it was longer than the implied time.
Steve.

TB I can see my son sitting in the car, the doors are locked and nothing is going to happen to him. He can see me and is not going to get worried etc.
How the hell can you compare that to both parents leaving a 6 month old baby in a car on its own to go into a shopping centre? FFS mate wake up, have you had too many beers over the xmas period or something? Its not even comparable!

B20, for the reasons i listed, you have no idea what the full circumstances of this case were. Why do you assume that you do?
We can base a whole discussion on assumptions if you like, but it won't get us very far...

You are not getting my point on this are you? There are NO circumstances that make this behaviour acceptable. They left their car and went into a shopping centre. Sorry but I do not know of any shopping centre that anyone could walk into, take their kids to the toilet and still be able to see the car with their 6 month old baby in it

But Bob, what you've just said is based on a whole range of assumptions, that's my point. For all you know it might have been little different to the circumstances prevailing when you fill up with petrol - we just don't know. We're not experts on New York shopping centres, so i just think it's a bit presumtious to come out with "Hang them" before we know full details. Comprendez?

What good is "being able to see the car" anyway? You could be paying for petrol (won't be looking at the car all the time), someone could smash the window and grab the baby. Or even the car. OK, so you've seen it but what can you do about it (particularly if they've taken the car as well)?

Exactly carl. There are times when there is an element of unavoidability in leaving kids in the car, unless you want to undertake a basically unfeasible lifestyle. All that you can do in those circumstances is take all possible precautions to limit the potential danger. If these guys in NY didn't do that, there's a case to be heard, certainly.

Tel we will have to agree to disagree on this one ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I just get very irate at parents who leave their kids in cars. Fine the baby was ok and it may have only been a couple of minutes. It was still long enough for someone to notice and go and get a police officer to deal with it. There are many sick people about and its not just laptops and wallets that can be nicked from cars. Children are the most important thing in life if you have them and they should not be put in avoidable danger. I just personally don't believe any circumstances exist that warrant both parents having to take two children to the toilet means its impossible for them to take the baby as well. Whatever the circumstances I hope they have learnt a lesson but very much looks like they havent with the fact they are fighting the case![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
I remember reading the horror stories on Sky News last summer where in the space of a couple of days several children had died where parents had left them in cars in heat wave conditions. Very different to this story I know but to me its quite simple, never leave kids in the car out of sight.

I said "hang em" not B20 and I was only 'avin a larf.
Theres no way I'm gonna get three kids outta my car just to go and pay for petrol or stopped at a shop to get a drink. Just think of the queues there'd be everywhere as it would take twice as long to do everything with the kids in tow.

Sorry but you are incorrect on your assumptions about not looking at the car when in a petrol station. I DO keep a constant eye on my car and make eye contact with my son to make sure he is ok and also to make sure he isn't causing any trouble like pressing every button there is and moving the seats all over the place etc ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
If its somewhere I am not familiar with he comes in the garage with me to pay anyway.

I look at the car the whole time I am standing there queueing, I would guess it takes 5 seconds for me to sign my signature and look up again when I come to pay. That is hardly out of sight as in leaving your kid unattended. If there was anyone hanging about the car I simply wouldn't look away until they were clear of the car. Don't be so bloody pedantic

Whether my son is in it or not I still keep an eye on the car cos of the thieving barstewards in this country. Just shows how **** a world we live in when you can't leave anything unattended for just a few minutes without worrying about it being nicked/brocken into etc.
