Oh dear oh dear.
A small matter of weeks after the expose of the honours system sham, they go and honour every single member of the England rugby team and rush through the honours on B.liars orders.
Cynical political manouvere? Hmmm...

Is that all this country has to be proud off?????
Typical tony..... These awards should go to members of the public armed forces etc that have done some real good.

They do Luke, but the average Sun reading man on the street doesn't care about that, so it doesn't get reported. This will put a smile on that propaganda eating, sun reading, mans face, and feel good factor will help the Government.
In 9 months when we've forgotten all about the Rugby and interest rates are .50% higher we'd better have a Wimbledon Champion in the bag, or things'll get ugly!

Well it is better than waiting 30 odd years before they bothered to give most of the 66 World Cup squad any kind of recognition. Personally I'd say these guys are a lot more deserving than most people who get gongs.
They are professional, have trained extremley hard, represented their country in the best way. They haven't failed (or missed) a drugs test. I would be happy if I had kids and they wanted to see these guys as role models and heros - much more so than most footballers.
Let's not forget that they actually won a major tournament aswell. Why do we always have this habit in this country of putting people (and teams) down when they have been successful?

Luke - I haven't got a clue what you're talking about. What does rewarding a team that has been successful got to do with the state of the country? It does no harm regardless of the perceived state of the country.
It was also nice to see Tim Berners-Lee getting a knighthood. A very modest man, who could have made a fortune out of his ideas, but decided to stay true to his principles, put his work in the public domain and lay the foundations for the modern Internet.

The other thing to note here as Chuck says - all will be forgotten in a few months. I hardly think Blair will win an election on his decision to give the England Rugby Team a few gongs.
Obviously this grabs the headlines as it makes a good story, but there were also plenty of awards given to the kind of 'ordinary' people that Luke alludes to in his previous post. From a press point of view - that isn't going to sell many papers.

Luke - words fail me. What the hell has my status as a Mod got to do with it? You make a statement with no attempt to justify it or back it up and then when I or anyone else questions it - youstart getting all arsey and defensive. What is that all about??

A lot of people got a lot of enjoyment from the rugby team's win. Look at all the thousands who turned out to watch them.
It make a nice change to see us win something, something which has taken years of dedication to do - not just the weeks at the actual tournament.
I am glad they have all been recognised and not just the usual one or 2 from the team who get singaled out.
I agree that 'ordinary' people should get recognised more but this should not be detrimental to the rugby teams recognition.

I can't say that I object to them all getting an Honour for their outstanding achievement and their real and valuable representation of our country.
Better than those who get honours purely by virtue of the fact that they have made shedloads of money either in business or in the entertainment world.

Have a look here. Has this **** ever been to Endland?
"I suspect that if you asked most English children what they want to be when they grow up they'd say, "An astronaut, a knight, or employed." Hey, it's good to have goals."
and
"Having people be obligated to address you as "Sir" must be a nice thing, even though in England many people still use the word as an everyday sign of respect."

UB,
We agree at last!! Tim F**KNG Henman - he's never won anything, he's hardly an ambassador for our country (unless advertising that we're crap at tennis counts) and he's a boring **** at the best of times. As for winning Wimbledon - there's more chance of finding rocking horse **** on the moon.
At least the rugby team won the world cup!
tiggers.

I think they deserve it, having achieved their sport's ultimate goal, and having represented their nation excellently - much more deserving than some of the other awards that are often handed out.
It lifted the nation, made us proud and gave us something (for once) to sing and dance about. I personally dont think it will all be forgotten this time next year (certainly not if 1966 is anything to go by!!!). The rugby fans that were there before the World Cup will obviously still be about, and if only a small percentage of those that jumped on the bandwagon are still following the game then that would be excellent.
They have put in years of dedication and groundwork to get this far - other sportsmen and women are honoured for their achievements (and some having achieved not much) so why can't these guys get rewarded?

Here's some more. 40 people have rejected honors that have been nominated by Blair.
