Lets have you theories

Unfortunately through no choice of my own - I appear to be the former, but want to be the latter...

Who buys into this corporate bull**** that everyones boss's push "oh you have to put the hours in if you want to get anywhere" etc etc; why exactly is that?

In essence what he is saying is I could sit on my **** & do **** all, all day & come 5.30 (ish ) I did a couple of hours work I would be a hero???

In all seriousness, I think the working environment has changed over say the last 10 years, people (especially my age range (20-30)) are not as readily 'willing' to stick the hours away, as we realise there is more to life than an office block.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I used to do 50-60 hours a week and come home stressed and sit fretting over work. I put in a lot of effort and made my department a big success, but when it suited them, they dropped me like a smelly turd. I now do 36 hours a week over just three days (so only going to work 156x a year, compared to 256 for m-f) get 7 weeks holiday, have much less responsibility and my hourly rate went up by 47%. Oh, and my works pension is 8% better. The prats I used to slave for haven't made a penny since I left. **** 'em.

I agree with much of your ideals- the old school type of business man, especially seem to think long hours are a neccessity, wheras younger types go for efficient methods/ practices that maximise their input.

I run (with two older guys) a decent sized business & only put the long hours in when specific time led tasks require it- in many of these cases I will take wk home with me and match it to my levels of concentration.

On a purely personal note, had such a blinding Xmas, nearly didnt bother coming back- then of course u realise half the things u have done were only because of who u are and what u do!

Used to be a work slave. Got paid pots of cash for doing it too.

Now I live a much more sedate life where the pots of cash are a little smaller, but only because I work a lot less hours. My equivalent hourly rate has actually gone up. Anyway, it's 1730 here so I'm off home....
