Question

If like they say this have been funded & built by private contractors, with no help from the goverment, then seeing as we have to pay to use it, is it not then classed as a "Private road"
and if it is, do we have to keep to the speed limits, as on private roads you can do what speed you like ?

and are there any camera's on it yet ???

Yes, but it's accessible to the public and therefore a public highway.

It was built FOR the goverment but the goverment didn't want to fund it so along comes a company, builds it then takes the money back its spent out via tolls, everyone is happy except the poor ba$tards who have to pay the tolls!!

You don't HAVE to pay the tolls!!!

If you don't want to pay a toll don't use it - how simple can it be?

Yes thats right. But what they'll do is claim things are better with the toll rd in place. This is because the roadworks that have held ppl up for years in this area are finished so therefore the traffic would flow better anyway.

They'll claim things are better with a toll road and bleat on about giving ppl choice etc as to which road they can use, therefore justifying building more toll roads throughout the country.

Question

So what's your opinion on French and Spanish roads as they have exactly the same system?

But do the French and Spanish still have to pay road tax ?
Also in the UK we pay much higher taxes on fuel

I am all for choice though.

What worries me is if in x years time, whatever government happens to be in power decides to convert the existing motorways over to toll road status.
They could use the excuse that they are too expensive to maintain and that using toll fees and private management would result in a better service.

Sounds like railtrack all over again

We won't be using the toll road because it comes out too far north of Brum for us. What's the M6 like now - is it really any quieter?

Ps Greg - we might pay higher taxes on fuel than France, Holland and Germany but our income tax is a lot lower which more than compensates overall if you work it out. At least if you don't drive as much, you don't get clobbered whereas you get clobbered on income tax regardless of what you drive.

I hope its a success.
Whenever i have been up north and are heading back to Brum, that last 10 miles can be a nightmare on the M6
I live in north Brum, so the toll road is of no use to me anyway.

Your right scoob_babe
I just like a good moan about the price of petrol
