IIRC it's something to do with the birds having something in their brains that is very sensitive to magnetic fields. They 'read' the variations in the earth's magnetic field like a map.

No one knows.
There are many theories. How do all migrating birds know where to go?
How do I always find my home from the local after 12 pints?
It's all under investigation.

It is has been shown that birds have a significant amount of a substance known as magnetite that gives them a sense of direction that is tuned relative to magnetic north.
It has also been said that there may be a similar mechanism in humans.... well in men anyway!

But are pigeons allowed to use phones while flying? or do they have to land in a safe place and switch their wings off to avoided getting fined?
