I used to have an irish "OIL ????" plate on a previous car, so I assume it must be possible.

You can have a NORTHERN Irish plate, but not an Irish plate.

GNZ 9878: These are Northern Irish plates, and, being part of the UK, they are legal for permanent use on the mainland.

ZZ 1234 plates are used when importing a car into NI from the Republic of Ireland, and are only legal to use for a short period of time before the car is re-registered in the UK.

Years ago I had a Northern Irish plate on my knackered old student VW Polo (it spelled my initials). One year I went on hols and parked it outside my girlfriends parents house, who then took us to the airport.

The nosey neighbours complained to the police who were traumatised for a few days as to why a scruffy Polo on N Irish plates was doing abandoned down the poshest street in Henley on Thames!!

Oh how we laughed when it was all sorted out. Not!!!
