Road of choice? A1 or M6 from South East to Scotland on Saturday.

I did A1 from Bedford to Newcastle and back again, total journey time 7 3/4 with 7 stops.
A1 - Pain as trucks overtake each other and traffic backs up, a few speed cameras, but gerenerally very clear, unlike the M1.

Did a trip from North Hampshire to Cockermouth in the Lake district.
Left at 4am, though Birmingham by 6am, and got to Cockermouth at around 9am (after a trip around Windermere). So probably got off the M6 about 8am.
That includes a couple of 20 minute stops at services, wasn't too much traffic around either.
Coming back the same evening, left the Lakes around 7am and got home just after midnight. Traffic was not much different.

M6 always quicker north of Manchester - even if coming to east coast - Edinburgh etc...
Where you going in Scotland?
If west of scotland, M6 is the no-brainer choice as motorway all the way to Glasgow...

Coming from just north of London to a place near Perth, so I don't think the East/West thing will make that much difference. My feeling is that the M6 may be a bit quicker but probably more boring. It will be motorway and dual carriageway pretty much door to door the M6 way. What are the roads like up to Edinburgh and beyond once the A1 finishes?

A1/M1's a pain, but not much point cutting across to M6 starting from North London. Take the A68 after Newcastle, great road, much rollercoaster fun, a few speed cameras in the middle of nowhere, but easily spotted. After that you're on the Edinburgh bypass, following signs for the Forth Road Bridge, then dual-carrigeway / motorway to Perth, only 30 miles away, no cameras. Enjoy (the last 130 miles)

If you're coming to Edinburgh/East Scotland take the A701 Moffat Road.

Fantastic road all the way up Leadburn. Bit of everything for you too - hairpins climbing out of Moffat, through to long, fast, open sweepers.
