Anyone else read this and thought - WHAT A BIFF!!!!
He gets caught breaking the speed limit by the camera, pleads not guilty and refuses to pay the fine on 'principle'. Continues to not pay the fine - so the court issue a warrant and eventually send him down for a couple of weeks.
He then moans to the paper about his predicament - What did he expect. He then also moans that the police/courts should be dealing with 'real criminals'. Well they would if people like him were not snarling up the system.
He was caught and then found guilty at court - pay the fine and move on!!!!

Another way to look at this, and I'm just playing devils advocate, these views are not necessarily my own......is
What would have happened if his car had been unregistered.......he would not have been traced...
And what would the penalty for an unregistered car be.....not a lot going on previous court results.....
Is this a fair result? Or should there be another way of dealing with this sort of incident??

But had he not have been traced then no court appearance would have taken place.
Plus, failure to pay any fine issued by courts/gov bodies will end up with a bit of 'bird'.
It'll be interesting to see if any of the pensioners who have refused to pay their Council Tax get a week or two of porridge.

What a fantastic plan!
Get a £60 fine, get sent to jail, sell your story to the paper for a few hundred quid...maybe even a few grand for exclusive rights to the story which is certainly topical at the moment.
Save money on food and heating bills by not being at home, get famous... the offers of adverts will come rolling in!
Sounds like a great "Get Rich Quick" scheme

It could be you next:
The head of the Prison Service has said that too many motorists are being jailed for driving offences.
"Martin Narey said the prison system was in danger of being "overrun" by motoring offenders and other petty criminals as the courts imposed increasing numbers of jail sentences.
"He says the result has led to a fourfold increase in the number of convicted drivers being put behind bars over the past decade.
It is easy to see how someone with a moral position might object to having their tax extracted from them in this manner. However, all motorists have to bear in mind that they are now a government cash cow. Every time you go out on the road you stand a higher risk than ever of ending up in jail, especially if you don't get your wallet out quickly enough to satisfy the new taxation laws.

HEDGEHOG - WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!
Why not just stick to the speed limits - or except the fact that if you don't you run the risk of being caught for speeding and fined.
If you refuse to pay the fine time and time again, have a spell inside.
Remember so called 'motoring offences' will cover disqual driving, death by dangerous, drink drive etc who I believe deserve to eat a little porrige.

One sad (indeed, disgusting) fact is that in this country only around half of the fines dealt out by courts are paid. This is because the low-life thieving scum, burglars, muggers etc. all lay low and don't pay - and our fine establishment can't be bothered to try to chase them up. It is not cost effective y'know!!!
However, those who choose to be generally law-abiding - you know, the ones who tax and insure their cars - are forced to display a big tag on their cars, so that should they exceed some arbitary speed limit (with NO victim involved) they get prosecuted to completion.
Isn't it a shame that the police can't send a (un-recorded delivery) letter to a burglars house demanding that they admit to a given offence (or name someone else who did it). Oh, and not replying to such a letter is itself an offence (even if you never received it!).
I forgot - thieving scum don't have any money that can be extorted, so lets go after the motorist instead (the taxed, insured, legal ones at least)

Felix,
I'm guessing that hedgehog is on about quoting a public official.
Even 10 years ago, being jailed for doing over 120 was a rarity. Now it is the norm. Regardless of the justification, the courts are resorting to jail for many driving offences now that would not have resulted in a custodial sentence for all but the worst cases a few years ago.
The same is happening in Canada. The Ontario Premier (Dalton McGinty) is thinking of bringing in "photo radar" (speed cameras) to raise revenue. He is completely up front about re-introducing it for revenue only. As a photo radar ticket does not incur points - only a fine - it does not act as a deterrent at all. Just a cash cow, pure and simple. Same as the UK but with the courage to be honest about it.

Boomer
Burglars etc who don't pay fines to the courts will have a warrant issued. The warrant will stay with them until they are caught or die. When they go to court again they will probably get a custodial sentence.
Burglars etc are hard to find because they either live in squats, derelict houses or on the streets. There's nothing stopping your average law abiding citizen from doing this if they want to evade capture!

Felix.,
that is EXACTLY THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!
Generally law abiding citizens - you know, the ones with jobs, the ones who pay taxes, the ones with houses and mortgages, the ones who have no reason to hide their identities (although they would prefer that they weren't spied on just in case
) are seen as "easy meat". You only have to read posts from people who are having to contest "congestion charge" notices when they have never been to London to see how the innocent are being picked on
Meanwhile the scum, in their self-created underworld, roam without fear
It might cost a few bob, and it might mean that that "the ones who are paid to enforce the law" have to work a bit harder (and perhaps be a little more focussed), but i am sure that the "Generally law abiding citizens" would be happy to fund things!
The graph is not linear - bang up the REAL crims, and potential crims will choose the honest path!!!
